Beep Beep Beep Beep What the hell is that freaking beeping noise? And why is my back hurting so much.
As I begin to regain consciousness, everything rushes back to me in a second and my eyes fly open. As I get a look at my surroundings my eyes begin to hurt. Everything is so white. A white door, a white floor, a white ceiling. This white bed that I am laying on. Then I notice a color. A very pale tan color. I know this color, and I know what or rather who it belongs to. But I know this color to be more vibrant and full of life. Not this still.
Maybe a little to still?
I begin to shift my position half way on the chair and half way on the bed, ever so slightly so that I would not wake this pale form before me, but I am unsuccessful in my efforts. As I reluctantly look at the face of my pale friend his eyes open and lock with mine. And my heart seems to break a little when I see the pain behind them.
"Bonjour" I say. Placing a not to convincing smile on my face, but he knows. And as he tangles his hand through my hair, that I know is a mess, he replies,
"Bonjour, ma femme."
We stay looking into each others eyes for a while. Not wanting the events of last night to tear us apart. Luckily, a nurse comes in to ease the tension. She is small with blonde hair, brown eyes. Seems quite pretty, if I do say so. She sees that we are awake and addresses us.
"Well good morning to the both of you. I'm happy to see that y'all are doing well." She has a sweet voice with a heavy southern accent. But for me it is far to chipper at a time like this.
I must be wearing my disgust on my face because Jordan squeezes the hand I did not know he was holding and gives me a reassuring look as he says,
"Good morning to you to Miss. Um?"
"Oh! Where are my manners. I'm sorry. I'm Nurse Rickara, but everybody calls me Ricky. But enough about me. How you feeling Mr. Hills?"
"Well, I can't see to clearly and everything sounds a bit muffled. But other than that I'm fine."
"Well it's good to know that your so optimistic Sir. Mrs. Hills what about you can I get you anything? You haven't left his side all night. You came in here last night sweatin like a sinna in church how scared you were."
Her question seems to ease me a little."No thanks Ricky. I think I'm fine. Thanks for asking though."
"No problem ma'am I'm here to help. I'll tell doc you both awake and he'll come up to see you two in a jiffy. You two talk amongst yourselves now."
And with that she leaves and I cannot help but to laugh.
"What?" Jordan asks.
I put on my best southern accent to say, "Well Mr. Hills, the doctors coming up in two shakes of a lambs tail to tell us what's going on."
"Wow! You're really good at that."
Keeping it up I reply, "Why thank you Sir. I do try."
We begin to laugh with each other and I see a little of the pain leave his eyes, but there is still something there that is hiding his usual golden shimmer.
Our laughs begin to die down when a man wearing a white doctors coat appears through the door. What is up with these people and their white.
He is looking at some notes in his folder and does not even bother to look in our direction as he says, "Good morning. I'm Doctor Nelson. Aaron Nelson. Mr Hills looking at you record you don't seem to have any problems with you health in the past, but i guess there is a first for everything. We are going to continue to run some blood test and try to get your vitals stable from all of the vomiting that you did last night. And we want to do a quick scan to rule out a couple of options."
At the last part I see Jordan's face fall and I am the one to speak.
"What do you mean 'a quick scan'? What's going on?"
"That's just the thing Mrs. Hills we're not exactly sure as to what's going on with your husband. But we want to make sure that everything is okay, so we are not leaving anything undone."
I cannot say another word. I do not know what to say, but Jordan does he always does. Even in times like this one.
"Well thanks for letting us know Doctor Nelson, and I'll be happy to take any test that you need. I have a wedding to partake in, in the next two weeks."
"That's good to hear. I'll send nurse Rickara back in. I'm sure you guys are hungry." And with that he leaves.
The room that was filled with our laughter a second ago is now filled with an uneasy tension that could be cut with a knife.
But the thing that keeps replaying in my head is what Doctor Nelson said,
"And we want to do a quick scan to rule out a couple of options."
What options need to be ruled out. Exactly what is going on here.
