"May!" Eliza cried as the four came into view with unconcious May and her duck in tow.

"May will be fine," Ebony assured her as she relieved May of the duck.

"What happened?"

"Trackers found us. May was hit pretty hard."

Eliza drew a breath to ask more questions. Upon deciding it was a waste of time, she instead decided to use that breath to command, "Take her inside. The longer we wait, the larger the chance is that she'll die."

"Liz, I told you, she'll be fine."

"This doesn't look like fine."

"Eliza-"

"Did I stutter?"

~~~
"She has a few broken ribs and a concussion, but other than that she's fine. Your friend will be up and walking within a week," the local healer told Eliza.
Eliza nodded in acknowledgement. "Thank you."
"You're welcome to speak with her, if you like."
Eliza looked over at Ebony, appearing to consult her though she had already made up her mind. "We'll see her."
May was already sitting upright, which Eliza took as a good sign. She had bandages covering her entire torso. Her white blonde hair, which was brushed to one side, seemed to glow in the midmorning sunlight, making her look angelic.
"May!" Eliza gasped.
The duck, which Ebony had brought along for whatever reason, lept from Ebony's arms with a soft quack and landed on her bed.
"May, you need to name that thing," Ebony suggested.
May picked up the waterfowl and cradled it in her arms. If it had been a cat, Eliza was sure it would have been purring contentedly. "You look like a Lennard," she muttered as she thoughtfully examined him.
"What is the deal with the duck anyway?" Eliza asked.
"It's a long story," Ebony muttered back. "I was running on two hours of sleep and I accidentally said the wrong spell and next thing you know May has a pet battle duck."
"Well then."
~~~

May was back in action within a week, and, goodness, she was glad. She had never liked being confined. And now she had a companion. Lennard the battle duck had refused to leave her side.

Jocelyn had laughed when they reunited. "He's your familiar," she had said jokingly.

Not like she had known what it meant. She wasn't exactly up to date on sorcere terms.

They had reported their individual findings to the rest of the group. Their next move was planned out.

They would make their first significant strike against Asterodea at dawn.

~~~
"Well, Assassin?" Asterodea inquired of her spy.
The traitor straightened from her bow. "Your soldiers didn't do much damage. Only Wintergreen was hurt. They're leaving at dawn. Wintergreen's still hurt, though. Kill her and you'll strike against Mendel."
"You're sure about that?"
"The two are very close, my lady."
"Very well. You'd best return before they suspect anything."
"Yes, my lady."
Heyo. So, I'm guessing that the climax is coming up soon.
I'm going to try and write every day. This was the chapter I wrote yesterday, so there'll be one more update today.
Hope you enjoyed, and have a nice day!
