"Well, of course we want to know what the mission is," Veronica said sharply, speaking for the first time. Eliza glared at her back. Veronica had a reputation of being overbearing and demanding.
"The sorcerers are getting out of hand," Grace said. "One witch in particular. Asterodea Cogsworth. She has risen higher than any other sorceress before her and has become their queen. And she didn't get there through generosity. She used force to subdue all who opposed her. Asterodea has become a threat that needs to be eliminated. If possible, bring her in alive. If not, kill her. Am I understood?"
All eight Assassins nodded their assent.
"Good. You have a week to plan and start training your apprentices. Leave at first light in seven days."
"Yes, ma'am."
~~~
"Nova, it's wonderful to see you again," Eliza said to November as they left the center room.
"I, too, missed your company, Liz."
Eliza smiled, truly smiled, for the first time in days. November wasn't merely Eliza's former mentor—she was the closest thing to a mother Eliza had in the ranks of the Assassins.
November lightly bumped her shoulder against Eliza's. "So, an apprentice."
Eliza rolled her eyes. "Trust me, I don't want her."
"Well, I wasn't exactly thrilled with my apprentice either."
"Nova, I've heard the speech a dozen times. 'Once you get to know the apprentice, you'll start to like her, maybe even love her.'"
"Well, I'm glad you listened."
"Because you were the least boring thing in the room. And that's not saying much."
"You tease, Liz."
"Oh, but it's true."
Still, both Eliza and November smiled warmly at each other. They had always enjoyed each other's company, despite their differing personalities.
"Well, I suppose we should go get to know this Analise Windwalker."
"We?"
"There's no way I'm letting you train that apprentice alone."
"As you wish, Lady November."
Hello again. I'm back with another Assassin update. Hope you're enjoying so far.
I've already written part of the last chapter and the first chapter in the sequel (ideas will not be stopped), and without spoiling anything, you're going to be calling me evil. (And don't ask if someone's going to die, because that's kind of duh in my original stories. What? A lot of authors are like that. Just look at J.K. Rowling!)
Peace peeps!
