The cave was incredibly creepy. Even with Luselva and two torches they couldn't see anything more than a few feet in.
"Seems like the kind of place Asterodea would hide out."
"Well, we've got to go in."
~~~
They expected rats and bugs. What they didn't expect was a deadly drop to their deaths.
A very large abyss yawned yawned in front of them.
Eliza dropped her torch over the edge.
"What was that supposed to accomplish?"
"It is very likely that we would die if we fell."
"That was apparent before you lost one of out light sources."
"The real issue is how are we going to get across?"
A very narrow natural bridge led further into to the dark. Aside from that, there was no way to get across.
"There's our answer."
Crossing the bridge, everyone was on edge, both literally and figuratively. If one were to stand with their feet just barely apart, the bridge wouldn't be much wider. The deadly drop constantly reminded them of the threat of falling to their deaths.
Luckily they made it across without incident.
Almost.
The end was in sight. They were almost there.
A few pebbles dislodged from the ceiling and came clattering down. The bridge shook beneath their feet. November, May and Lynn were already on the other side.
The bridge began to tremble. As one, those remaining on the bridge dashed at full speed for the other side. Veronica lost her footing and fell over the edge. Eliza, Analise, and Ebony made it to the other side. The bridge collapsed with Luselva still on it.
The remaining six all relaxed in relief. They made it. Two more were dead, but they made it.
"Pathetic little things," Asterodea's voice echoed. "Don't they teach you to never let your guard down?"
Blinding light filled the previously sightless cavern.
All of them stood quickly with their weapons at hand. Immediately, all but Eliza were frozen.
"No need to bother you all. This is between little Lizzie and me."
Eliza looked Asterodea dead in the eye. "This ends today."
Asterodea laughed lightly. "I daresay it does."
No matter how fast Eliza was, Asterodea was faster. She either dodged or blocked everything Eliza threw at her, all while delivering highly effective blows. This was a fight she was destined to lose from the start.
But she never gave up, as always.
Beaten and battered, Eliza fell back, defeated. Rage and hate can't fuel you forever.
Eliza spat blood out of her mouth and looked up at Asterodea with hate in her eyes.
"You can't win," Eliza told her.
Asterodea stood over her prey, savoring the kill. "I already have."
A final bolt of energy. The blast knocked her back and wiped the last bit of life from her body.
Eliza Mendel was dead.
Almost a year of writing and it's finally finished. Thank you to all of you who voted and commented. Your support means the world.
Many thanks,
Update: I had to unpublish the chapter really quickly to save a change. I don't know why, but it wasn't saving like it usually does. Sorry about that.Song in media: Survival- Muse
