The pieces sat strewn across the board.

Five were red.
Four were black.

My heart leaped against my chest. Time to finish this once and for all.

And with that last fatal thought swimming in my mind, I moved another red piece.

And she let out a frustrated scream.

A sly smile donned my features.

The hallway was silent as I made my way out, striding as fast as I could to avoid him.

Each foot slapped the hard marble floor angrily. A child?

Why hadn't I been told this before the wedding? Hmph.

"Wait!" The call I knew had been coming ricocheted along the walls but I ignored it and carried on walking.

How many secrets would it take?

That was what made me turn around and tap my foot in a bored manner, covering up how I truly felt.

"What?" The voice that replied didn't sound like mine, it was cool and collected- everything I knew I wasn't.

Ramses stood as tall as ever before me. I had thought he sounded pathetic but oh how wrong I was.

A scowl adorned his rough features before he spoke, "Why did you runaway? You were bound to meet them soon."

Them.

What in Hathor's name, did that mean?

Were there more of the little adorable creatures lurking around, the ones who could ruin the game?

His look brightened as though he had gone through a great realisation.

"You didn't know."

It wasn't a question and yet I longed to correct him. I hated seeming out of the loop. Instead I just stood there and let him talk.

Ramses stepped forward in three long strides and brought his hand up to my cheek.

"My past isn't my present or future. Each time there was someone else... Someone who doesn't matter now."

His riddles confused me. "What?"

A dark look swept through his features.

"You didn't know. They didn't tell you. I have many wives Maathorneferure... More than those who live here."

His eyes moved up to mine, a shiver of a promise inside them.

I waited for him to finish what he started. Finish my quest.

"You see, back then I was what they called a 'player'," the word sent a shiver of disgust through him and he dropped his hand.

"I believed that if one wife wouldn't do, why not have another? And another... And another..."

My heard clenched. What was he trying to tell me, other than what I knew. He had around 10 wives.
