Chapter 16
Sleep. Need. Sleep. Now. I stumbled upstairs to my dorm, fumbling with my keys as I unlocked my dorm. Turning the knob, I pushed the door inward and expected to see my roommate. Still a no show. The empty bed still sat, untouched, against the opposite wall of the white walled room. Well, I guess I'm on my own this year. Throwing myself onto my bed, I shoved my face into my pillow and groaned. Just as I was drifting off to sleep, I heard a strange crinkly coming from my forehead. Sitting up, I saw a piece of pink paper with my name scrawled across it in swirling script. As if it were a bomb (er...), I picked it up gingerly and unfolded it. The page was covered in elegant cursive writing. I sat up, reading the letter.Dear Ember,
Did you really think you would get away that easy, darling? If you know what's good for you, you'll return to Washington DC. I'm sure Langley will be glad to see you again. Oh, and have you watched the news recently?
Then the note ended. No signature or anything. I tried studying the handwriting, wracking my brain for any script similar to it. Unfortunately, nothing registered. With shaking hands, I cropped the note and grabbed my laptop. Logging on, I read the headlines. McGallen campaign falling due to terrorist threats; new Director of Intelligence for CIA blames McGallen family. Anger ran through me. How dare Barnaby! That bastard! What terrorist threats? Is Joshua okay? Ariana? The rest of the McGallens? Suddenly, as if it could read my mind, my phone started ringing. I wasn't tired anymore. My anger was like a shot of espresso. I answered the phone without checking the Caller ID.
"Yes?" I said.
"Miss Rhinehart, you are needed back in DC immediately. A helicopter will be waiting at Logan International Airport for you."
Then the lady hung up. I already knew where the call was from. Langley. Shoving my phone into my back pocket, I screamed into my hands. Gah! All I ask is for a college experience! Why can't I have that?! Packing only what I needed into a small tote bag, I scribbled a note for anyone who might come to find me. It'd take to long to notify someone. Glancing at the time on my phone, I saw that it was far too late for anyone to really be working anymore. 11:45 PM. The dean would have gone home hours ago. Duty calls. Grabbing my laptop as an afterthought (you never know when you'll need a portable computer), I left my dorm and hoped I'd return.
(Wow, short chapter. Anyway, what do you think is going on in DC? Vote and comment or PM me! I promise longer chapters are to come!)
