Chapter 40
"I think Joshua is hiding something from me." I said, my phone pinched between my head and my shoulder as I folded my freshly cleaned laundry.
On the other end of the line, Addy grunted. In the background, Amber was casually doing her homework while eavesdropping. I didn't necessarily want her knowing the details of my love life (sorry, Amb) so, I started talking in French.
"The other day, we walked to the Quad together and I could tell he was hiding something. He told me it wasn't important, but his eyes said otherwise." I said in my fluent French.
Addy's response was in English, nonetheless.
"Why are you speaking French, Ember?"
I bit my lower lip and glanced over at Amber. She was now "completely engulfed" (aka acting) in her Intro to Modern Literature homework, reading and writing studiously. I almost rolled my eyes. Worst eavesdropper ever.
"My roommate is attempting to eavesdrop. But, that's not important! Mom, I need some help with this! I can take down a Turkish ambassador, but boy problems have never been my thing."
Addy chuckled from the other end of the line.
"No, that they haven't. So, personally, I suggest you let it play through. Just go along with him as you normally do and see what you can find out. Maybe he'll just tell you."
I shrugged, folding my last piece of laundry and seizing my phone in my right hand. I collapsed back into my bed, pressing the receiver to my ear. I need to know what Joshua's hiding. It could be important. Plus, I can't stand not knowing things.
"Maybe. I hope. I don't want to have to plant a honey trap maneuver on him."
Addy laughed. I gasped. Addy laughed! the first time since Garret's funeral!
"Oh, don't worry, sweetie. You won't have to resort to that. The best way to get a man-er, young man-to talk is in bed. Just don't forget to use protection!"
I laughed, my cheeks heating in a furious blush. Awkward. How many mothers actually encourage their daughters to sleep with their boyfriends? None. Nino. Zip. Nada. Cero.
"Dully noted. Bye, Mom. Love you."
"I love you too."
I hung up and placed my phone besides me in my bed. I guess I have to get Joshua to sleep with me now...HELL YEAH! BEST ASSIGNMENT (sort of) EVER!
(Ugh. Sorry, this sucks. Granted, it's 11
at night. Vote and comment! Better chapters are to come!)
