Wake Up

After Kayla had walked everyone into their own little apartment-like places to stay, the group separated. Everyone had their own little place to stay, unless they decided to room together. It was Carl, Rick, and Michonne. Carol by herself. Glenn and Maggie together. And of course, Daryl and Beth.
The rooms had a kitchen, with a small ration of food, a bathroom with a shower and a toilet, and living room/bedroom with a small coffee table. On that coffee table was a house phone. And on the wall, was the rules. The same ones that Kayla had given the group in the large air-conditioned building.
Beth was looking at them on the wall when Daryl walked behind her and read over them himself.
'Do not try to leave unless given permission. Do not discuss the past unless further question. Do not discuss your life before the outbreak. Always answer when the phone rings. Work hard, and be happy. Enjoy your life here!'
Daryl was honestly confused, and he could tell Beth was too. They looked at each other for a moment before the scruffy redneck turned and laid down on the bed that was in the room.
What exactly was 'here?'
If he could remember, there was no name to this place.
Without anymore thought to it, he looked over at Beth.
"What's on your mind?" He asked the blonde beauty.
She sighed and sat on the foot of the bed. As soon as she sat down, she shook her head, looking at the wall ahead.
Daryl knew she was over thinking about something.
"Come on, spill it." She finally glanced his way.
"I don't know what it is. I just have a really off feeling about this place. There's something in the back of my head that is telling me not to trust these people."
"Beth,"
"What? It's true. Those rules.. What is this place? Why are there rules? We could be run down by walkers any minute and they have rules? Better yet, why can't we talk about our past? Why can't we just freely speak. Isn't there freedom of speech still?" Beth rambled on and on about the rules and how none of it made sense.
Daryl sat up and placed his hand on her thigh.
"Regardless if you wanna trust them or not? They have our weapons. Stored up tight, I'm pretty sure. There ain't nothin' we can do about it. We decided to come here. We decided to stay."
"Oh." Was all the small blonde girl could muster out.
Daryl had a point. A very valid point and that.
There was a sharp and aching silence in the room after their last conversation. They sat in the same exact spot for what felt like ages before the loud ringing of the small house-like phone cut the tension.
'Always answer the phone when it rings.'
One of the rules.
Beth looked at the redneck before standing up and grabbing the phone.
"Hello?"
"Beth, correct?" Kayla's voice rung through the phone.
"Uh, yeah. It's me."
"I'm sending Liam to come get you and Carol in the morning. You start your commitment of hard work tomorrow. Any further questions?"
"Well," Beth started, chewing on her thumbnail. "What are we going to be doing?"
"I'm glad you asked. But, we cannot tell you until tomorrow. Also, we are having a welcome get together with some of the crew tonight. It's your choice whether you and your man come or not. Stay happy and don't forget the rules!" And with that, the phone call was over.
Daryl stood up and walked towards Beth, putting his arm around her.
"What was it?"
"It was Kayla. She said that Carol and I start work tomorrow. She wouldn't tell me what we were going to be doing. She also said they're hosting a welcome get together tonight with the crew, and we were welcome." Beth leaned into the rednecks touch, sighing and closing her eyes.
"Wanna go? I'd like to go figure out some more stuff about this place." He mumbled, looking around the room and shaking his long hair out of his face.
"Let's do it." She said, leaning up and kissing the male on the cheek. "But first? I'm getting a shower." Beth said, smirking and turning out of the males embrace. "And while I do that, fix us up somethin' to eat will ya?"
Daryl chuckled softly before shaking his head and watching his little farm girl go into the bathroom and shutting the door.
For being in a life or death situation almost every day?
He couldn't ask for a better life.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Daryl and Beth stepped out of their small apartment-like place, walking closer to where Carol was staying.
"Should we tell her that Kayla is starting work for her and I, tomorrow?" The blue eyed beauty asked, glancing over at her redneck lover. He pondered for a moment and was about to speak, but the gray haired woman's door swung open.
"Oh, hey guys!" She said, sounding very chipper.
"Hey," Daryl started. "We were just about to knock and tell you somethin'."
"Which is?"
"Well, it was just about a phone call we received earlier. Kayla called and said that she was gonna start work for you an Beth tomorrow."
Carol smiled and nodded, motioning for them to come along and follow her. They obliged and followed after the older woman, smiling and walking hand and hand.
"I got the same call. Also, they're having a little get together tonight? I'm still so confused about this whole thing. I don't see how they have so much electrictricity. I mean, phones, lights, stuff like that. It's insane."
Beth and Daryl slowly nodded and continued to follow after Carol. Finally, they made it into a small wooded area beside the apartment like buildings. None of them really knew what was there, or really, where anything was; for that matter. But, they knew where this was going.
Carol started speaking again, inhaling deeply.
"I really feel like we need to inspect this place.. I mean, there has got to be something going on here. Kayla seemed really suspicious when she was speaking. She had these weird rules. I don't see how they are keeping this place running, it's a damn apocalypse! How do these walkers not-"
She was cut off by the couple, who completely agreed.
"Find this place? It's a god damn town! There are so many people, so many lights! How the hell do the walkers NOT come here?"
Carol nodded and smirked, glancing at the young couple that seemed to understand this whole thing without much explanation.
"Should we tell Rick, Carl, and Michonne about this?"
"You think they didn't already think about this?" Daryl asked, scoffing. "They ain't dumb."
"You never know, Daryl. Don't be a smart ass." Beth spit back, trying to correct the scruffy male on his rudeness.
"Sorry, but I mean, they ain't stupid. Usually they think of things before we do."
"Yeah, but still."
The older woman looked down and thought for a moment in the silence that sliced through the previous correction.
"We should go inspect when we go to the get together tonight, and then if we see anything suspicious; we can alert the others. We just have to be very sneaky." She stated.
"Or," Beth started, clearing her throat and looking around for a moment. "We could really just wait until everyone has met up, then we can go search around since no one would be there at their stands?"
"That's a great idea!" Carol whispered in a very audible tone. "We have to do this."
"But we need to be very careful." Daryl said, worrying about the so called 'love of his life.'
Beth sighed, grabbing her lovers hand, running her thumb across his skin gently. "I will go to the get together. You guys go searching. Then we will meet back up here, okay?"
The small group nodded in agreement, slowly processing the plan.
In the back of Daryl's mind, he knew this wouldn't end as well as they had planned.
He could only imagine what was about to happen.
