Upon our arrival, the party was in full swing. I had imagined a small gathering by the river, but that was far from reality. Suddenly, I was startled by two arms encircling my waist and a whisper in my ear.
"So how 'bout a drink?" Turning to face Tristan, I can't help but smile; his grin seems ever-present, and it's truly captivating. We make our way to the keg that's been planted in the ground. He grabs a cup, fills it, and offers it to me with a kind gesture.
"Thank you. So, who are all these people?" I look around seeing a lot of faces I have never seen before.
"Well not sure really, Jill invited everyone she seen at the show." Naturally, she did. I spot Josh and Kristen heading our way, prompting a groan from me. Tristan catches my look and bursts into laughter upon seeing them. Josh pauses to grab drinks for himself and Kristen while she glances over at Tristan.
"You know smoking kills. If you die, you've lost a vital part of your life." I bury my face in my cup, shaking my head. Tristan glances at me, disbelief etched across his face at what he's just heard.
"Please, tell me she didn't just say that," I giggle into my cup, anticipating what's next, and I don't intervene; she brought it upon herself. "You know, if something kills you, you're dead, right? That means you have no life left to lose; you're just DEAD!" I burst into laughter as she looks on, bewildered. Josh takes a hefty sip from his cup, shaking his head, knowing well that it's useless to stop us. It's just too easy.
"Oh, okay, I guess I never really considered that." How is this girl still alive? Honestly, she seems to lack any common sense. I wipe the sweat beginning to form on my forehead as the heat reveals its true intensity tonight.
"Are you alright, Maddie?" I glance at Tristan, noticing the concern etched on his face.
"Yeah, I'm just sweating like a whore in a cucumber patch." Once more, I swipe at my forehead while Tristan and Josh share a laugh.
"Wait... I don't get it. Why would a whore be sweating in a cucumber patch?" I simply gaze at her, then turn to Tristan, who is now chugging his drink. Linking my arm with his, we begin to walk away, and I cast a backward glance at Josh.
"Yeah, have fun explaining that." He simply flips me off as she questions him once more.
"You know, I never thought a person could actually be that stupid." Tristan pulls me closer as he speaks. I notice Jill and Ethan approaching us, their laughter growing louder as they draw near, tightly embracing each other while we sit on the truck's tailgate.
"What is with Josh and the blonde?" Jill nods her head toward them.
"Please, let's not draw their attention; I can't take much more." I seriously doubt I can endure an entire weekend with her.
"That bad huh." I nod taking a drink and taping my fingers on the side of my cup. Bad? Has she not met her? No, probably not, Kristen would be crying right now.
"Don't get me started." Tristan was chatting with Ethan about the fish they caught the day before when suddenly, screams pierced the air. I glanced around, trying to discern the cause of the commotion. That's when I saw it, and I couldn't help but burst into laughter. Kristen was hopping about, yelling, "Get it off!" while someone else let out a scream.
"Take Barbie back to Malibu!" I simply roll with it; after all, it's just a cobweb.
For the remainder of the evening, we steer clear of Josh and Kristen, as I'm convinced, she would've dampened my spirits. Eventually, Josh escorts her home, and I remain with Tristan as the party winds down. Ethan sets up a tent, and we decide to camp out for the night.
