"Nadia you can join the conversation any time you want." Janelle said to me, as I typed away on my phone.
"Huh?" I questioned, not even paying attention to what she and Raven were talking about.
"We're trying to coordinate a trip to the movies," Raven said.
"It's not that hard," I responded without looking up.
"She must be texting Xabrien," Raven sighed.
They were absolutely right. We were both at lunch, so this was pretty much our hour to text each other during school. I took advantage of it everyday. After school we both almost always had something to do, then we each fell asleep for naps. So once we got up, it was straight homework time. Of course we'd get on the phone, but then we'd both be ready for bed after doing all our homework. I couldn't see him for lunch, so I at least wanted to talk to him.
Xabrien 💓: yo sister be buggin, you kno that?
Nadia 👑: What happened now? 🙄
Xabrien 💓: she told me you talking to somebody else so I won't be needed anymore... that's true?
Nadia 👑: Nah, you're the only person that has my attention right now, my friends can't even get me to stop texting you long enough to hold a convo w me about the movies 😂😂
Xabrien 💓: why she don't want me to fw you no more 🤔? she was all for it a few weeks ago
Nadia 👑: I know, I guess she had a change of heart. I'm not doing anything, so maybe it's you.
Xabrien 💓: she tryna throw her stank ass friend down on me. no thank you 😐🚮
I looked up from my phone and laughed out loud at Xabrien's message. Hadia didn't want me talking to Xabrien anymore because she wanted her friend to be with him. Wow, some sister that cared about my happiness. I debated on telling the girls about the situation, but they were clearly irritated as they were trying to coordinate a girls day and I wasn't actively participating.
"It was kinda relevant. But I'll have the car Saturday. So we can do whatever y'all want at whatever time y'all want," I said engaging in their conversation.
"Okay, well what we gonna go see? And who gone buy snacks this time?" Janelle asked.
"Neighbors 2 maybe? And not me because I gotta put gas in the car," I threw my hands up.
"I just bought frozen yogurt for everybody like three weeks ago. It's your turn bitch," Raven said looking at Janelle.
"Fuck," Janelle laughed. "My direct deposit hasn't hit yet."
It was awkward for me. Both of my friends had jobs, but I didn't. My parents preferred that I didn't work. They wanted me to focus on school and bought me pretty much anything I wanted. Everything I needed came first. I was very appreciative of that. It was arguable that I didn't know the value of a dollar because I always had them taking care of me, but I knew my work ethic was outstanding. When it was time for me to enter the workforce, I didn't doubt my abilities for a second.
"I can chip in a little if you need it boo," I said to her.
She nodded and thanked me.
"So what's up with homecoming?" Raven asked.
"Girl I don't know," Janelle sighed.
"You gonna asked Xabrien to come with you?" Raven asked me when she noticed I wasn't saying anything.
