This life wasn't ideal. You hadn't wanted to be swept into the supernatural world where werewolves and other terrifying creatures lived among you - some even being your best friends, but you had been swept into it and you had to live in this world. It wasn't perfect. You were more than likely avoiding death quite a lot of the time but with your friends - the pack - you were happy.

There was one person who made you extremely happy, though; Derek Hale. Derek was the moodiest, most irritating and coldest werewolf you'd ever met in Beacon Hills but he was also the softest and kindest; he was the one who'd been hurt the most. You'd struck up a friendship with him but after a few months, you wanted more. He did, too.

Stiles often asked you, 'Why haven't you and Sourwolf admitted that you're both so in love with each other yet? You're driving me nuts.' Your answer was always the same; a simple shrug.

You'd tried to tell Derek but each time, he'd push you away. Just when you thought you were getting somewhere, he'd tear away from you. He was always like that; one minute so close then the next so distant. It was hard and it hurt like hell every time he shut you out but you loved him and you would not give up.

It was a horrible night; rain drizzled down it was a light rain but it soaked everything in its path. You made your way into Derek's building, shivering from the cold. Quickly, you found your way up to the loft and found Derek staring out of the window.

The room was dark; the light from the moon and street lights being the only things that illuminated it. It was warm. You shrugged your jacket off, placing it down, "Derek?"

"Why do you care about me?" His question took you by surprise.

You walked closer, "What do you mean?"

"Why do you care about me?" He repeated, "I know how you feel."

"If you know how I feel, why haven't you ever said anything?" You asked him.

His gaze was focussed on the rain as it dropped down drenching everything in its path, "You'll get hurt."

"You don't know that."

"Everyone always gets hurt."

Derek's life had been a series of people getting hurt or killed because of him. That's why he held back, "You always think about the people you lost or the people they got killed but did you ever think of the people who you saved? Like this whole city?" You paused before you spoke again, "Like... me?"

He shook his head, "The deaths outweigh the lives I've saved."

This time, you shook your head, "Not to me they don't." Your voice was strong. It dawned on him then that you really did care about him; you really did want this, "I care about you, Derek."

"You shouldn't."

"You're probably right but yet, here I am." You spoke loudly, "Tell me, has anyone else stayed this long? Has anyone else cared about you this much that they don't care about anything other than you?" He shook his head, refusing to look at you still, "Derek, I am that person. I've been here since I met you and I'll always be here."

His life has been utter torment for him; his mother, his sister, his girlfriends tried to kill him, hell even his pack - everything he had always left him. He couldn't let someone else get hurt because of him.

You saw the conflict on his face and you stepped in front of him, wedging yourself between the window and him, forcing him to look at you, "I trust you, Derek." You whispered, hand on his cheek, "I want this. I want you. Try and push me away all you like but it's not going to work. I will be here forever."

"Everyone I've ever loved has died. It's me, Y/N; I can't let you die, too."

"You love me?" He hadn't directly said it but his words heavily implied it.

He closed his eyes and took a deep breath before opening them and staring at you, "Of course, I do."

"Why isn't that enough?"

"You'll get hurt-"

"I can protect myself." If it really did come down to it, you both knew that you couldn't protect yourself; that you'd need Derek to help you. But, you both grazed this fact and barely paid attention to it, "Just let yourself be happy, Derek. For once in your life, open up."

His stare burned with intensity as he battled with himself inside his mind. It was not an easy fight. So, to end the quarrel in his brain, you kissed him. It was soft and slow. You pulled back after a few seconds as Derek stared at you and you could see his walls coming down. He pulled you back to him, kissing you with so much force; so much emotion that it took your breath away.

Derek's hands gripped your hips as he pushed you against the window and yours tangled in his hair. He broke away from your kiss to pepper kisses on your neck, "I'll never leave," You whispered, "I promise."

For so long, he'd yearned for this and now, he finally allowed himself to have it. And on a rainy night, Derek Hale finally allowed himself happiness.
