A deep, dry breath escaped my mouth, sending me shooting up in a sitting position. The butterflies in my stomach feel like they're coming up my throat- whatever the hell I'm in is shooting upwards- feels as fast as light.
My first instinct is to scream. "HELLO??! WHERE AM I?!! PLEASE HELP I- I DON'T KNOW WHERE I AM!!"
My screams get drowned out by the sound of rattling chains. The wind throws me off my balance. The butterflies come up and the warm, bitter liquid drips through the holes in the metal box. Red and blue lights flash around me. Warm tears stream down my face and I try to think straight but I can't. What's my name? What's my age- at one moment I forgot if I was even a boy or girl. I sit in the corner and bawl my eyes out. "MAKE IT STOP!!" I scream as the fast movements make me nauseous again.
My salty tears slip into my mouth- making me more disgusted with everything. I try to stand up but can't. I've been in here for ages now, it feels.
All of the sudden it jerks to a stop, throwing me forward and burning my wrists against the metal. My eyes had just adjusted to the darkness when above me, light starts spilling in. I blink and cover my eyes with my hands. Pretty sure I'm deaf by now, I hear quiet muffles from above. I look down and see how far up I am from the ground. There's no bottom and I realize how fast I must've been going. What if it drops back down?
The lights still too much for my dilating eyes when something jumps down. I jump back, I've never been so scared. I sneakily pinch my wrist- am I asleep? Why don't I remember anything? I'm probably dead.
"Hey Greenie, welcome to the glade." A deep, muscular voice says. The smell of grass and fresh air fills the box. Is my name greenie..? Do they know me?
My eyes are just able to handle the light- I see at least 30 boys looking down on me. Ranging from ages 16-22, all unfamiliar faces. "Why am I here?" I ask, my mouth dropped open.
"Wish I had a shucking answer to that, green bean." The same voice answers.
I stand up and pull myself out. A few boys back out of my way and I stare at everyone. Then my attention draws over to where I am. A huge square, trapping us all in with these huge stone walls. I was amused and terrified at the same time. Everything was so damn unrealistic.
"Hey, calm down there. We've all-" before whoever said that finishes- I take off running. The burst of energy came out of no where- I needed to get out. Away from all the boys, the box, the nervousness, I needed to escape this nightmare- the glade. Whatever that was.
I swear I've never ran this fast. Everything behind me seems to disappear as I run forward. I notice there are openings in the walls. Not really knowing what I'm doing I run towards it. The grass is choppy and my shoes are making my feet ache but I keep going.
A loose tree branch catches my foot and I slam against the grass. I look up, the world spinning around me. Instantly I'm on my back, and three boys are standing above me. The sky is blue with a few clouds, the sun is beaming down on us and I notice how bad I'm sweating. I back up on my hands and knees, probably looking like a lost puppy. "Calm down." One of them says. He's darker skinned, buff, and looks scary. I shake my head. The other boy puts his arms up and lightly pushes down- gesturing to me that they mean no harm. He has dark brown hair that is perfectly brushed, a strong build and the tallest.
I keep backing up, feeling worse than before. "Slim it greenie, you're safe here." The last boy says. Blonde hair, small nose, caring eyes, perfect pink lips, tall and slim, strong arms....
"Wow Newt, you calmed him down." Says the brunette, "shut up Minho." He replies and punches his shoulder. Newt.
Wait what? I snap back into reality and look up at them. Why was I thinking about Newt? I push the thought out of my mind. I'm probably just in shock.
"As said before, welcome to the glade. My name is Alby. Do you remember yours?" The darker skinned boy asks, and I sit there dumb founded.
"Guess not. That's okay tho, we all came up in the box like you did- one new boy every month. No idea what the shuck is going on. All you can do is relax and listen to us, running like a scared puppy will do you no good."
I hear snickers from behind them. I slowly stand up and force myself to swallow my pride. For all I know these boys are a group and are a lot stronger than me- I should probably not fight. "You'll get used to it- your name will come back in a day or two. And as I said before- none of us know why were here so don't ask.
"Now let me give you a tour, then we'll have dinner. We're all a family here okay? Calm freakin down." He says and turns around and walks, I follow him. I turn around and lock eyes with Newt, he smiles at me and I look away before I have time to smile back.
First, Alby shows me the north door and explains what they are. Although he doesn't tell one thing about what's outside. Then we move west, passing the slammer which is right next to the homestead. South of that is the deadheads, the map room- which is right in front of the south door, then the animal pens. Past the east door is the tree groves. "And that's it." He says, clapping his hands together. "Welcome home."
