So as you chug along, the doctor at some point will suggest pre-birth classes and to figure out your "plan".
I think these classes are a total waste of money. But if attending one makes you feel better, then go. They're not going to tell you anything you don't already know but determining "how" you want to give birth is something you want to think about.
I've seen it all. I've seen chicks do it the old fashioned way with no drugs. I've seen scheduled C-sections (for medical and simply scheduling reasons). I myself, pushed like a champ with the help of epidural. I also know people that did at-home water births with a midwife... no doctor or hospital at all.
Everyone's opinion of how it should be is different and up to you. But if you want my advice, just push with epidural. And I'll tell you why.
First off, many people think of scheduling a C-section because they are so afraid to push a kid out. The watermelon to lemon analogy is sort of accurate and can scare you to death. Whatever you do, do NOT watch a birthing video online. It will scar you for life.
I wouldn't advise a C-section unless the doctor suggests it. It's a BIG surgery and recovery won't be fun. At least after vaginal birth you can walk within a couple of hours.
Secondly, I recommend the epidural because... ummm, it's awesome.
But really, the epidural is the best pain relief you can have while in labor. It 100% does not pass along to the baby - which is a common misconception. Most other drugs do in fact pass through to the baby.
What it really allows you to do is REST and RELAX. Yes, it's possible to do that in labor... with the help of the epidural. Because let me tell ya. Before you get that it hurts like a bitch.
Let me take a minute to remind you how proud you'll be to OWN that moment. As tough as guys are, this is something they could never handle.
The pain is excruciating so just get the epidural so you can enjoy the amazing day it'll be.
And remember, if you didn't find out the sex of the baby this will be even more exciting of a time because you're looking forward to something else besides the pain!
