After what seems like hours have passed, the same officer at the reception desk comes up to me. I realise I have read those few magazines a thousand times in the past few hours.
The officer comes up to me with another officer, this one looks older and like he's been in the job for years. I take a breath in ready to hear what they have to say.
"Hi, I'm Sargent Jones. I have found out where your friend is. Not too far from here actually." He stops to make sure I am listening to him. I look him in the eye and then I look at the other officer.
"Officer Thomas and myself will go to the location. And we will take it from there. Luke, I'll be right back." Sargent Jones says to me and then walks into the cupboard room.So Luke is his name, Luke Thomas. Nice name for an officer. I quickly shake my head to clear the thoughts away.
"Do you want a drink?" Luke says to me and smiles yet again.
"Is wine available?" I laugh. A smirk appears across his face.
"No I'm afraid. The best we have is water."
I smile back at him. I sit back and put the magazines away. I shuffle on the sofa to try and get a little comfy, not knowing how long the other officer would be.
"I'm ready. Shall we go, then?" Sargent Jones appears from the room and walks over to where I sit and hands a peice of paper to Luke. I notice he has put a gun on his uniform. This really was begining to look like an action movie.
"Are you ready, Miss?" Sargent Jones asks me. I look completely stunned.
Me? He wants me to go to? To a possible crime scene?
"Um, yes. What will I have to do? And my name's Faye Winters, you can call me that if you like." I sit up from the sofa and cross my arms.
"You will sit in the car with Luke while I go into the location. I have back up officers who know where we are going if anything happens. I have to see what's what. Off we go, then. We'll take the police car." Sargent Jones walks towards the door, Luke follows him and I toddle behind slowly, my mind still racing.Being in the police car is so strange, but cool at the same time. I sit in the back while the two officers sit in the front. I uncross my arms and peer around the car, it's quite big inside and seems so different from the cars I have ever been inside.
A few moments later, Sargent Jones pulls up into this alleyway, and I see there's a little building there that looks quite overrun. This must be where Cam is. I feel myself start to shiver, but then think to myself, officer Luke is in the car with me so I don't have to be scared.
Sargent Jones opens the car door and walks out, he heads for the building.
"Is this where my friend, Cam is?" I ask nervously, even though it seems pretty obvious that this is the location they traced from the voicemail message.
"It is. Don't look so nervous. Sargent Jones has been in the job for over thirty years, he knows his stuff. It will be fine." Luke turns to me and nodds his head in encouragement.
But will it be fine? I have never been in this kind of situation before. My mum rushes back into my mind. Maybe I can talk to officer Luke about it, or at least ask if he can find some contact information for me when he gets back to the station.
"Um, I have a question, it's totally off topic. But is there a way you can get someone's contact information?" I notice I'm biting my nails as I ask this, so I quickly pull my hand away.
"There is. I can look when I get back to the station. Haven't you tried calling people's records?" Luke smiles at me but he looks curious at the same time.People's records! Of course. I haven't thought of that. But I doubt they would give out a celebrities contact information, even if she happens to he my mother.
"I doubt they would give out the information. As my mum is kind of...a celebrity." I say the last word so quietly because I think it's pointless to ask a policeman to give me the contact details of a famous person. He wouldn't believe she's my mum, anyway.
But he does believe me. He looks stunned as he stares at me.
"Who is she? If you don't mind me asking. I will see what I can do. I can't promise anything."
"Louise. Louise Winters. I have only just found her again. She gave me up when I was young, I came here from England to find her. When I found her it was like I was complete, but she had to rush to the hospital because her other daughter was taken there." I have no idea why I'm babbling all my life story to an officer but I can't stop myself. It's a huge relief to be able to talk about it and about my worries. Luke nodds at me to show he's listening and smiles with a little sympathy.
"That's one huge life story. I can't imagine what you've been through, Faye. And who said your mum has another daughter? She was dating someone and he died, but he had a daughter. Ever since, his daughter, Grace has been almost like a daughter to your mum..." Luke stops for breath before continuing. "Anyway, Grace isn't her daughter. I guess your mum just feels sorry for her so she takes care of her, even though Grace is twenty. I think you can say I read a lot of magazines and webpages. If you want, I can help you contact your mum." Luke smiles at me and places his hand on mine.
I feel a huge sigh of relief escape through me. So my Grace wasn't my mothers daughter. I then start to think why I felt so jealous anyway.Suddenly, I hear a thumping noise. I look ahead through the window and see Sargent Jones running back to the police car.
Luke gets out in a rush and I can hear him saying something to him, I'm not sure what.
I suddenly hear a gun shot, and it's not Sargent Jones' gun. The kidnapper has a gun! Which means this wasn't going to be as easy as planned.
