That evening, Emmett was sat by the river at the bottom of the field when he saw a willowy figure walking near. "Hey." The figure spoke. Turning to see properly, he saw that it was Taylor. Taylor was wearing a cream coloured shirt and black jeans. Her hair was still in a messy bun but a lot more strands had fallen out. "Oh. Hi." Emmett said shortly. He turned back towards the bubbling river and listen to the slight breeze brush the wheat and the night crickets. This was his favourite spot to come after a long day. "Look, I'm sorry I didn't tell you who I was before." Taylor interrupted sitting down beside him. Emmett continued to stare at the moonlit waters. He needed to think. "We used to come here. Every summer." Taylor breathed. Emmett remained silent. Taylor sighed and looked at the ground. Is he mad at me for not saying why I'm here or who I was Taylor thought. Emmett exhaled loudly and looked at Taylor. "Why are you here? You leave when we were kids then poof, you came back out the blue. It's not right Taylor. You can't just waltz back into my life." Emmett said grimly. Taylor felt horrible. She suspected that it was Ms Gilbert who sent the invite and Emmett had nothing to do with it. "I- I came back for your wedding." Taylor mumbled. Emmett turned his head very sharply towards her and narrowed his eyes. "What?" He growled. Taylor gulped slightly. Never in their childhood had Emmett been this mad at her. It frightened her. "I said, I came back for your wedding." Taylor repeated. Emmett continued to stare at his childhood best friend and sighed. He tensed his jaw as if he was to say something but thought against the urge. He turned back and faced the river. He exhaled and put his hands to his face. "This is not how I wanted us to meet again." He grumbled as he pulled his hands away from his face. Taylor bit her lip. Slowly standing up, the two friends faced each other and Emmett cleared his throat. "Can we start again?" He loud whispered to Taylor. Taylor smiled and nodded. "Hello ma'am. I'm Emmett. What's your name?" He said smirking extending his hand for a handshake. "I'm Taylor. How nice to see you." Came the reply. Then the two friends walked back to the farm like nothing had happened. The sounds of the river, the crickets and breeze-brushed wheat was soon as quiet as the moonlight. They entered the house closing the door behind them. Click.
