It was a much nicer day than yesterday. It was cooler. Yesterday was too hot even from inside the castle. The sky was bright blue with big puffy clouds. There was a perfect cool breeze that blew my hair back slightly. I decided that I didn't need to put up the hood of my cloak since there's no one around for miles to see me except for Jason and Rachel.
I walked ahead of Jason and Rachel who are walking side by side just making small talk. I didn't feel the need to interrupt their conversation just yet. Before we had left, the Blind King had given each of us extra supplies like a backpack, bedrolls, blankets and food. It really seems like he wants us to succeed in our quest for the Word when he couldn't himself. Maybe that's what happened. Maybe Maldor caught and tortured him, causing him to loose his eyes. I wondered how exactly Maldor tortured his enemies.
'How bad would it be if Maldor tortured us if he ever managed to catch us? Maybe he went easier on children than anyone else? No that's stupid. He's a dictator and tyrant. He kills everyone dead the same way. Well maybe not the same forms of torture but you get what I mean'
I pulled myself from my thoughts and noticed that the three of us are going kind of slow. At this rate we would reach the ocean cliffs days later than we meant to and it will mess up everything. I looked back at Rachel and Jason who have fallen silent at this point. It was one of the reasons I decided to look back and stop thinking so much.
"Jay, Rachel, we should speed up. I want to get as much ground covered as we possibly can before nightfall." As if me words had flipped a magical switch in their heads, Jason and Rachel had started jogging at a pretty good pace. Soon the three of us are jogging alongside one another. I glanced at the two of them. "Oh, and we're going to have to take watches at night. You know so we don't get killed in our sleep." I said dryly, in attempt to lighten the mood.
"That's not funny." Rachel muttered. "Funny things are." I retorted, stealing Tony Stark's line from the Avengers. I only realized what I'd said after I said it. I shifted my backpack on my shoulders. My shoulder was still sore from when I dislocated it when I dropped into Lyrian. Literally.
Rachel scowled at me. I rolled my eyes back at her. The three of us lapsed back into silence again until Jason blurted out awkwardly. "Sooo, have either of you gone cliff diving before?"
Rachel and I both look at him as if he's crazy. "Uh, no." Rachel replied.. "I only went on 'educational' field trips. It's the perks of being homeschooled." Rachel blew her bangs out of her eyes while she put air quotes around the word educational.
"You're homeschooled?" Jason asked, impressed. "Wow. I thought you would be more of a public school type of girl."
Rachel shook her head. "Well I meet people loads of people while I do track and field but other than that everything if supposed to be educational trips. That's what I my parents and I were doing in a national park. Educational."
Jason nodded. "You must be really smart if you can get you parents to go on lots of trips."
"Well, yes and no. Some are fun like going hiking around Europe while others are like going to China to practice my languages." Rachel explained.
"Cool. Europe must be fun. How many languages do you speak?" Jason asked.
Rachel's face just lit up at the mention of languages. "I love languages. I speak Spanish and French fluently. I'm okay at Italian and Portuguese. I can manage Chinese, Russian and a couple others." Rachel stated proudly.
"Russian. Damn, you're good at languages. How long did it take for you to learn all those?" I asked I'm actually interested at this point.
Rachel thought back. "A few years. I gave up on trying to learn Greek and Latin. I sucked at it." Rachel's face scrunched up, trying to remember some words in either Latin of Greek.
I laughed at her expression. "You could probably join S.H.I.E.L.D if you wanted to. And if it was a real thing."
"That would be great." Rachel started laughing too. "So how many languages do you speak? Everyone is required to learn at least one."
"I'm so bad at languages." Jason said. "I can barely speak Spanish." he grumbled.
I smiled at Jason's frustration. "I fluently speak Gaelic and Spanish. I can only read French with the exception of a few basic phrases like 'do you speak English?' and ordering food. I'm actually pretty good at Latin and Greek because I'm a complete mythology nerd." I joked with Rachel. "I can speak Russian pretty well because my friend is part Russian and his girlfriend is full Russian."
Rachel nodded. "Huh? You pretty good with languages too." Rachel complimented me. I smiled back. "Thanks."
I looked up at the sky. It was getting dark. I noticed a cluster of trees that hide a clearing off the main dirt road. "Hey, you guys want to stop here for tonight? We'd probably get lost if we continue."
Jason and Rachel nodded in agreement. "So who takes first watch?" Jason inquired. Rachel and I looked at each other, thinking the same thing. "Um, we were thinking you should take fist watch because I feel like you would fall asleep first.
"Hey! I would not!" Jason tried to argue. "Oh, come on Jay. You know you would." I snickered.
"Yeah." Rachel added. "You totally would, Jason." she laughed along with me. "I'll take second watch." That meant that I have the third watch. The three of us set up our bedrolls and blankets in the middle of the small clearing. I dozed off only to be greeted with more dreams but it was different. It was more like a neutral memory than a bad nightmare.
******Dream******
I'm walking along an empty street. It's dark out. The only lights are from the streetlamps above. I don't recognize the street but it seems like I know where I'm going. I stop at a corner just under a streetlamp. I feel like I'm meeting some one important. And dangerous. A dark figure wearing a long dark trench coat appears at the other end of the street. The figure walks closer and closer to me. I look the figure up and down to assess whether they are a threat or not. I want to see the figure's face under the hood. And just when the figure gets close enough for me to see the person's face, everything blurs into nothing.
******End of Dream******
I rolled over and groaned. Rachel had a hand on my shoulder, shaking me awake. I blinked a few times to get my eyes to adjust to the darkness. I sat up and wrapped the blanket around my shoulders. "I'll wake you guys at dawn." I yawned. I sat back with my back against the tree closest to me. I scanned the surrounding area for any sign of unwanted company. I detected nothing but the chirping of crickets. After a few hours of watching, the dawn broke across the sky into light pinks and oranges. It's really pretty. It's too bad it was still too dark to sketch anything. I sighed and waited for the sky to get a bit lighter before I woke Rachel and Jason up. We wouldn't get very far if we're all dead on our feet while someone attacks us.
