Layne
I brace myself as I walk towards the edge.
I'm sorry, Marlene. This is my apology to you.
"Layne!"
I keep walking forward.
"LAYNE!"
Someone grabs my arm forcefully and jerks me away from the edge. Abbey.
"Let go of me!"
"No! I lost Marlene. I'm not losing you too!"
"We barely even know each other!"
"That doesn't matter!"
Abbey turns me around to face her. "Layne, please. Stop it. Tell me what's wrong."
"I killed Marlene, that's what's wrong! Now let me go! You wouldn't want a murderer for a friend anyways!" I snap, pushing Abbey away from me.
"I'm sure you didn't do it on purpose!" Abbey objects, not giving up.
"DOES IT MATTER?" I scream at her and that stops her in her tracks. "Marlene's dead! And I'm the reason! Does it matter if it was on purpose?"
Abbey looks taken aback. I take advantage of her momentary loss of words to start walking back to the edge.
But she grabs my arm again. "Will you just leave me alone!?"
"No, Layne!" Abbey shouts. "You think you killed Marlene? Well, news flash: she was already dying! She was dying mentally, in her soul, and even if you dealt the final blow, you weren't the only perpetrator!"
"You don't understand, Abbey! I pushed her! I pushed her off the cliff! There was a fight and I tried to save her but I ended up pushing her off the cliff."
I don't realise I'm crying until I hear my voice break. But I don't care. I just need to get away from Abbey. I fight to break free of Abbey's grip but she's strong and she doesn't let go. "Can't you see then? It wasn't on purpose!"
I don't reply to her. I just keep tugging and tugging and tugging. But she doesn't budge.
"You might have pushed Marlene off the cliff and killed her physically, I'm the one who killed her mentally!"
I stop struggling. "What?"
"I think it's time I told you, Layne, how I know Marlene."
