You're finally on your semester break, which gives you a month and a half of freedom. You want to work at a café in your free time, but Jongin wouldn't hear you out. You reasoned with him, telling him that you need work experience in the future. You're not sure why you're even insisting, because you know how dominative Jongin can get when he wants something.
"Besides, you're not going to work when we get married," he brushes you off and goes back to reading his documents. "You'll take care of Taeoh and me."
"I don't want to just rely on my husband, whoever that is," you sigh. Jongin looks at you, eyes showing hurt but shooting daggers. Maybe they're guilt daggers because you immediately start feeling guilty. You mumble, "What if something happens and we don't end up married? I need a back-up plan."
"A back-up plan?" Jongin raises an eyebrow. "What kind of back-up plan will working in a café give you?"
"Anything is better than just feeding off my CEO boyfriend," you reply, tone sharp and annoyed.
A beat of silence follows and all you can hear is Taeoh's show playing in the background. He doesn't even realise what is going on, as if the tension in the air is just a passing breeze. You sigh and turn to the boy, carrying him up and sitting him on your crossed legs. He doesn't even look away from the TV. You bury your face into his hair, trying to calm yourself down.
Jongin murmurs your name and you realise that he's already walking towards you. You rest your cheek on the top of Taeoh's head and turn to look at your boyfriend. He sits next to you on the couch. "You know you can work here with me. You used to work for me, in case you'd forgotten. But then you didn't want to take my money, you didn't want to be paid." He caresses your head, combing his fingers through your hair. "Whatever you're getting from me is because I want to give them to you."
"But I don't want you to spend on me..."
"If you really don't want me to, then I won't," he simply says. "You can work at the café if you want to. I don't want to make you unhappy."
"I'm not unhappy," you mumble and bury your face in Taeoh's hair again. "I just don't want to be useless."
"Umma," Taeoh turns around so fast that the back of his head knocks against your nose. Jongin immediately moves closer and cradles your head against his chest. "Umma, dolphin!" Taeoh looks at you as he points to the TV. All the while, you're covering your nose.
"What did you say, Taeoh?" Jongin gapes at his son, still holding onto you.
"Dolphin!"
"No, who is she?" Jongin points to your face. You're also looking at Taeoh, waiting for his answer.
"Umma," he says, as if this is what he has always been calling you. You thought he might even be wearing a 'Duh, who else?' look.
Jongin laughs happily, bringing his son closer so he can give his head a big fat smooch. "Say it again, Taeoh-yah!"
"Umma!" Taeoh exclaims, excited that he gets kisses as reward for calling you that. He pounces on you.
Jongin is still laughing and despite yourself, you're grinning too. Jongin ruffles his son's hair affectionately as he tells you, "No more back-up plan, sweetheart. I don't want Taeoh calling someone else 'Umma' if it's not you."
You listened to Jongin in not taking up any jobs. While he works, you bring Taeoh out and about, letting him see the world outside his father's office. You've even met your sister with Taeoh joining in. You've been staying over at Jongin's place too, your apartment completely deserted. Your boyfriend insists on paying the rent for you, but you don't want him to. He explains that since you're staying with him anyway, it's his responsibility that you're paying for a house you don't even use. But for the first time, he doesn't win this argument.
