"Okay. This is the last time. This has to be that last time." I say.
I start to turn on cerebro. Flicking switches, pressing buttons. Once the coordinates were in I picked up the helmet with shaky hands. I place it on my head and watch as the room turned dark before flash of white appeared before my eyes. Then I appeared into someone's back yard that had a small well. It was sometime in the evening, birds were still chirping and there was a light breeze that swayed through the trees.
"Pretty lady! You cut your hair !" A voice giggled.
The sounds of leaves crunching as a adorable little girl approached me in her pajamas and a leather jacket twice her size. She stopped in front of me with a smile on her face and excited eyes. I looked down at her and smiled back.
"Hello Nina. It's nice to see you." I say softly.
"Come! Meet one of my friends!"
She runs off and to the well and I followed her. A deer was waiting in the bushes and slowly making its way out. As Nina stands by the well the it came closer. She held out her small hand and it placed its head on her palm closing its eyes. Nina turns to me and smiles.
"I feed him berries and give water. You two have never met. It's a shame he can't see you."
The deer lifts its head up at her voice, snapping towards my direction before going to drink from the well. I nod my head in agreement.
"Yes. He's quite lovely. Nature adores you." I say.
"Would you show me your wings?" She asked.
"You always ask and I show you every time. Have you become smitten with them, little one?" I ask with a teasing grin. Nina looks away with tinted cheeks and giggles. I can't help but to laugh as well.
"They sparkle blue and white like ice! And you look very, very pretty in your true form."
"Why thank you, dear. When you develop your full powers like...your papa they will be beautiful as well."
There was a peaceful silence between us. I watched her interact with the deer and other animals that came by to visit. The sun was beginning to set even more and soon it would be night. As the last of her furry friends left--a squirrel--Nina sighed and turned her head looking at me with droopy eyes. I smiled, knowing she was tired and soon she would go to bed and I'd leave.
"When will you visit me? When will you come see me?" Nina asked as she held back a yawn.
I looked down at the leaves. I had explained to her how only she could see me--she though I was a ghost or that she wasn't quite right in the head--and she was happy to know I was a real person. Like a pen pal of sorts. Minus the sending letters to each other.
