"It'll be fine," her dad had said before she ran through the wall. "Don't worry." He had to practically tear her away from him to make her leave.
When Fiona opened her eyes, she felt like she was in a different world. The August breeze swept past her, bringing with it the sounds of hundreds of people talking. Teens and preteens in school robes were at every corner, greeting a friend, saying goodbye to family. For a second she felt like an intruder, a stranger. Both of her parents were "muggles", and the only thing she knew about wizards was that they carried around wands and cast magic spells. Fiona glanced behind her, wishing she could say goodbye to her father again. Wishing she didn't have to leave. Pulling her jacket on, she finally realized how alone she was.
Suddenly her truck was knocked against something heavy, and she turned to see a girl about her age emerging out of thin air. She had bright red hair, almost as bright as the blush covering her cheeks. The girl's trunk had bumped against Fiona's. "Sorry," The girl said.
"Oh," Fiona mumbled, too worried to act friendly, "Sorry." She hurried onto the train, not glancing backwards. It would be best just to find a place on the train where she could sit and read.
"Hey, wait!" The girl called. Fiona froze. Had she done something? Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the girl approach. "Did you drop this?" She held out a small object for Fiona to see. A picture of Fiona's smiling mother with a small girl on her back. It was the one they had taken at the ice cream parkour after her team won their first cheerleading competition. In the background she could just make out her friends holding the trophy. Fiona drew her mouth up into a line and snatched the piece of paper from the girl.
"You can go now," she muttered, turning away. Fortunately, the girl didn't follow her. Fiona made it into the train and started looking around.
All at once Fiona could hear witches and wizards talking, and her headache started to return. Glancing at the compartments on either side of her, she saw a frog apparently made of chocolate hop onto a young wizard's lap. The enormity of her situation hit her again. She, who would never had guessed a secret wizard's school was in her country, was actually a witch who would learn to do crazy things.
Continuing down the hall, searching for empty compartments and keeping her head down, she heard a group of friends laughing as if they hadn't a care in the world. Fiona couldn't help but stop and sigh. She would give up her enrollment in Hogwarts for friends like that.
Daydreaming, she didn't notice when she bumped into a witch about a year older than her. The girl pushed her long brown hair out of her face and looked at Fiona. As the girl looked at her, Fiona knew she couldn't escape as easily as she had with the girl and the suitcase.
"Sorry," She mumbled.
"It's ok." The older girl told Fiona, and her bright smile seemed to calm down Fiona. "I'm Mina Cauldwell."
"Fiona." She stated, smiling slightly. 'Don't let her know that you're nervous. Peppy cheerleader face. Come on, this is your chance to make friends,' she thought to herself. "Sorry again. I was looking for a compartment."
"It's no problem Fiona." Mina assured her. "Come with me, we can look for one together." She started walking down the corridor, now with Fiona following her.
