CHAPTER 1

I looked around the corner, nothing. I ran. Don't look back, don't look back, I warned myself. And for the first time I had run this street, I didn't.

Just as I reached the other side of the street, Wolves passed. Crap! They could've seen me, thankfully they hadn't. So I wasted no more time thinking on this and ran to the next building.

Suddenly, the lights turned on, and the ultra reality cameras switched off.

"Dude," I complained to my coach. "I just got it right."

His son grinned over at me from his perch on his truck.. "Yeah, and I need to see you get that right over and over and over, understand?" Coach asked.

"Yes sir," I saluted and hurried off to grab a water so I could watch his son try and make me look like I had no idea what I was doing.

Which, he did this time just like every other.

"Boom," he called to me. "That's how it's done."

I glared at him, "I know what I am doing, Cole."

He smiled and walked over to me, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. "Do you need a hand walking home? You know, just to make sure that the Wolves don't get you." The Wolves were a group of people we've been hiding from. They have Sheep, humans that they have branded with their mark.

"I'm fine," I said even though I really wanted him to come with. "Your dad will scream at me."

Thinking back on that choice now, I should've let him come with me.

I threw the water and ran around a corner. My house was only three blocks from the resistance.

I could hear the sound of water dripping and in the gutter, and then everything was quiet, way too quiet.

My gaze locked on a child sitting near a stack of boxes. Maybe I could just sneak past him and he wouldn't see me, I thought and quickly scolded myself for even considering it. The boy would get caught and branded, at such a young age he would be taught to treat the Wolves with respect and every word they said would become law. I edged over to the boy and crouched down next to him. "Come on."

He looked up into my eyes with trust. "I'm cold," he shivered. I yanked off my black coat and threw it around his shoulders. "Thank you, my name's Colton."

"I'm Eden, come on," I grabbed his hand and pulled him tight against me, "Stay close, okay?" He nodded.

I ran, we were so close to my house, just a few more feet... Finally, we made it.

"You can sleep here," I said pointing to a spot under a window. "If you sleep here, Wolves won't be able to see you when they scan the building through the windows, or you could sleep in my room. It's impossible for them to scan through the thick steel walls, coded to seem as though everything that was inside as invisible." He grinned and nodded. "Okay, this way." I took his small hand in mine and walked down the hall into my room.

I layed on the bed and he hesitated before climbing up next to me, and crawling under the covers. We huddled close together for body warmth.

Late that night, a rather quiet tapping noise woke me. Being very careful, I grabbed my .22 caliber rifle and slowly crept towards the noise. Deep within my mind, I tried to convince myself that it was just a bird hitting my window with it's beak, but I couldn't shake off the thought that the Wolves had finally gotten me.

I quietly stepped over a crack in the floorboards and continued on, but slower this time. What if they had found me and I was now off to become a Sheep? And what about Colton? I couldn't just let them get him, he was too young and yeah, I had to admit it, I had grown attached to him in a small brotherly way. My feet were on the edge of the wood and I was inches away from the living room, I closed my eyes and took the step.

A teenage boy sat on the other side of my window, giving me an evil grin. "Can I come in?" His voice was quiet, yet powerful in a way. And he threw of waves of hatred.

"Depends," I glared pointing my rifle at him. "Why are you here and what do you want?"

He stood and tapped louder on the glass. "Well, I kinda want in, it's cold. Just open the window."

I walked over soundlessly and opened the window.

"Why are you here?" I asked, putting down my gun and pulling a knife out from my pocket. I placed the knife directly above his heart and pressed down. A little drop of red could be seen and it was slowly growing as I shoved the knife harder into his chest. "I asked you a question."

"Look, I don't really want to tell you why I'm here, so how about," he pushed the blade away with his finger, "You come with me, and I'll let the kid in the back live."

"Who are you?" I growled pushing the knife as hard as I could into his chest.

"Ow, god, woman, that hurts." The knife wasn't long enough to reach his heart, but it could give him a nasty wound that would need to be tended to if he wanted to go without an infection.

I eased off and pulled the knife out of his chest. "There, now why do you want me to come with you?"

He moved his shirt down and a wolf tattoo became visible. "We've run out of sheep, and it's amazing how well resistance fighters turn out to be as Sheep. So, now here's your choice, I can take you or that kid in the back."
