"Drex," I flew into my brother's arms.
I could feel him grinning into my neck as he held me to him. "Kid, you don't even know what it was like without you here. And, your boyfriend's back again."
I pulled away from Drexel's hold. "Cole is not my boyfriend, you dimwit. And where is he?"
"Show the kid that was with Jennifer and your little mutt," meaning River, "to their rooms, first and then you can go kill Cole with kisses, okay?"
"Whatever, where is Cole? I need to talk to him."
"He's in your room." As soon as the words had left his mouth, I was gone looking for River and Colton. I found them and gave them rooms near mine.
I slipped into my room, and looked for my guns and knives, that's where Jennifer said she had put them.
"Genius, over here," a cocky voice called out to me and I jumped.
"Cole, next time you scare me like that, I'll murder you." I walked over to him and stood a few steps away from him. "We just gonna stand here and stare at each other?" I whispered.
"I just want to make sure I don't forget you the next time you run off to be with another resistance," he whispered back
"I said I'd be back, and here I am-"
"You were living with a Wolf, Eden. A Wolf. Okay? And then I hear that you brought the mutt back here with you, and I'm sorry if you don't think that having a Wolf among us, Sheep, seems like a terrible idea. Imagine one day, you have kids and then they're gone. Who are you gonna blame? The Wolf. He took them and gave them to his Alpha. I can't have him here and not understand why, he's a Wolf, and we don't know his motives-"
"I lived with him, I would know what he was gonna do, I was an Elite. His Elite, but he never made one wrong move against me, he didn't even order me around. Some Wolves don't get a choice, they have parents that were Wolves and then the children inherit the business," I snarled at him.
He wrapped his arms around me. "Okay, fine I trust you and your judgment, but I do not trust him and no amount of batting your eyes will get me to change my mind on it." I opened my mouth to say something, but he started talking again. "Jennifer hid you knives in the closet, under the dresser."
I walked over there and kicked the dresser until it moved back, effective but not smart. Sure enough, there sat a jewelry box filled to the brim with my knives, and next to the box sat my pistol and my rifle.
"Oh my god, I didn't have this one before." I picked up a dagger with cloth around the blade, I never wrapped my blades. "Did Jennifer get me this one?"
"No, she didn't open the box once." Cole came to crouch next to me. "Maybe..."
"Maybe what?" I hissed, eager to find who had given this knife to me. It looked like my father's but he had taken it with him when he had died.
"That mutt you brought with you, what pack is he from?"
My mind was drawing blanks. "Check, on my left shoulder I have his father's tattoo." I turned my back to him and he lifted the back of my shirt and gasped. "What is it?"
"Snake's venom, the one that killed your dad, we need to get rid of the tattoo, seriously. Drexel will freak when he sees it-"
"When will he see my tattoo? Maybe while I'm training, but not much, I'll be fine. Besides, he knows that I was with Wolves, Jennifer told him when she had scheduled the break out. He won't care anyway, he never liked my dad."
Cole gave me a nod that made me unsure that he was actually listening. "Okay, sure, but look closer on the blade."
I brought the knife up to my face and inspected the hilt. "There's nothing on it,"
"Look closer, dummy." I ran my fingers over the curves and indents, nothing.
When my fingers brushed over the actual blade, I felt a small difference. There was an engraving on the blade. It read:
There are two wolves inside every person, one is good and one is evil...
I gasped and showed it to Cole. "Look, I ... That was my dad's favorite saying."
He grabbed the knife from me and tossed me a necklace. "Gav bought this for you," he said when I picked it up.
"Drexel got this?"
"Yeah, he said you'd need it, something about how it's subtle, now leave me alone, I'm trying to figure this out." I opened the necklace and took out the small knife.
"Give it back," I whispered and Cole gave me a weird look. "Just give it here and get out."
He gave it to me and got out. My head was pounding as I sat down on the edge of my bed and closed my eyes.
"Please," I gave a silent prayer to whatever god was listening to me. I reopened my eyes and looked at the the necklace again. On the back was an engraved with the rest of the saying on the other knife:
...They fight each other every moment, of every day. Eventually, one will win, but that depends on which one is stronger. Which one will win? The one you feed.
My dad had told me that story over and over again when I was younger. Memories flooded me, tears rained down my face.
There was a knock at the door and I stood, ready to tear off whoever's head that had decided to knock on my door. But when I opened the door, my plan faded.
