"Come on daddy!" Annabelle cheered, running to the swings. Since there was no school, and I promised her that I would spend the day with her, she decided to go to the park, and of coarse, the first thing she goes for is the swings. "Push me daddy!" I chuckled as I walked up behind her and gave her a big push. "Higher, higher!"
"I think that's high enough sweetie, we don't want you getting hurt." I continued pushing her, until she decided it was enough. Then, she went on the slide and monkey bars, while I sat at a bench not that far away.
"See you later Abigail," someone said. I turned my head in the direction of the voice and saw a girl walking away from Abigail. She then turned and saw me. She waved her hand towards me, and I waved back.
Abby walked up to me and sat on the bench. "Hey Michael, I didn't expect you to be here," she said.
"Yeah, well I'm here with Annabelle," I said, pointing to Anna on top of the monkey bars.
"Oh, that's Annabelle? She's so pretty," She said. "I'm here with my nephew," she said, pointing to the boy talking to Anna.
"Nephew?" I asked.
She nodded, "I have an older sister who is almost 27. She had Austin when she was only 18." I looked at the boy and Anna laughing. "What grade is she in?"
"First," I replied.
"They must recognize each other from school then. Apparently the first and third graders had to have their classes together for a week. The third grade teacher had a baby and the first grade teacher is her cousin, so he said he would watch her class."
"That was awfully nice."
"Yeah, it was," Abby said. She looked at the time on her phone then shot up from the seat like a rocket. "Well, we better get going, my sister wants him home by two." She put her phone away and looked at the jungle gym. "Austin it's time to go," she called. Austin said his goodbyes to Annabelle before jumping off and walking towards us. "I'll see you later Michael," she said, before walking off with her nephew.
"Who was that daddy?" Anna said, startling me since I didn't know she was there.
"Austin's aunt," I told her.
"How do you know her?" She asked.
"She's in my class."
"She's pretty," Anna said. I looked in the direction of where they walked off and saw them get into a car. "Do you like her?"
"W-what?! No. Besides, I'm not ready for a relationship."
"Daddy?"
"Yes sweetie?" I asked.
"Will I ever have a mommy?" That just made my heart drop. She always knew she was adopted, and I've prepared her for if kids bully her because of how old her dad is, but I've never prepared myself for her to ask this. A little girl needs a mom, and the fact she am doesn't have one because she was adopted just makes things worse.
"You will one day sweetie, I promise," I told her, making her smile. "Come on, let's go get some ice cream then go home," I told her.
~~~~~~~~~~~
"What kind do you want?" I asked as we looked through the glass display that protected all the different flavor a of ice cream.
She pointed to one and said, "that." The ice cream was a dark pink with chocolate chips in it.
"Watermelon splash please," I told the woman serving at the counter. She made it then handed it to Anna.
"And for you sir?" She asked me.
"I'll have rocky road please, " I told her. She made the cone then handed it to me.
"$6.83," the woman said. I didn't have the exact amount on me, so I gave her a ten and told her to keep the change.
We sat on a bench outside, watching cars pass us as they drove around town. It was already four in the afternoon, and considering it's a Saturday I'm surprised that there aren't many cars. Usually people try to get all their shopping and running around done on Saturdays since most people go to church on Sunday's. Sure it's only in the morning, but usually Sunday's are busy for people in this town. "Dad, door u have to work tomorrow?" Anna asked.
"Yeah, I do in the afternoon," I told her.
"I don't want Mrs. Valetta for a babysitter, she's to boring."
"Now Anna, that's not nice. Mrs. Valletta is a wonderfu-"
"I want that Abigail girl to babysit me," she said, cutting me off.
I stared at her for a second, trying to figure out why she wanted her as a babysitter. I sighed in defeat and got up from the bench, throwing away our dirty napkins. "I'll see what I can do," I said, sending a smile on her way.
Annabelle jumped up with excitement and joined me as we walked back home.
