"How you doing Ab," I asked Abigail through the phone. It's been a couple days since she dumped her boyfriend for cheating on her, and I haven't been able to talk to her since with work and my mom visiting, so I finally found a chance to.
"I'm fine. Sure, I'm still a little hurt from the fact that my boyfriend of almost two years cheated on me, but I'm fine." There was a moment we're I could here her hold back a sob. I wanted to say something but didn't know what, so I just stayed quiet. "My parents kinda expected it. They never did like him. My mom thought he got in trouble with drugs and the police. My dad on the other hand didn't have this much suspicion, but he knew he wasn't good. I guess I was just being such a stupid, lovesick girl that it went right over my head."
I sighed, pinching the brim of my nose. "Nobody would've known his intentions besides him. You fell in love with him when he was good, and you guys being separated made him do bad things. Who knows, maybe he's been using you to cheat on another girl..." My voice trailed off at the end as I realized what I was saying. "I'm and idiot. Look, I'm sorry, I just-"
"No, no it's okay. Your just trying to make me feel better." There was a long pause between our conversation. Every once in a while I could here her sob or gasp for a breath.
"Do you wanna come over?" I asked her.
"What?"
"You still seem down, I feel like you might need a friend. Besides, Anna won't stop telling my mom about you. She thinks we're dating. I think you could come clear things up?"
I heard her giggle, something I've been missing from her for a long time. "Yeah, I'd like that. When should I come?"
"Whenever you feel like it. Do you need me to pick you up, or-"
"No, no, I'm fine. I'll see you in an hour?"
"Sounds great, I'll see you then." After we said our goodbyes I hung up the phone, and as soon as I did, my mother and Anna came into the room.
"Is Abby coming over?" Anna asked, her eyes big, bright, and full of hope.
"Yes, Anna, she is coming over. Go get ready," I told her. She smiled, jumped around excitingly for a bit, then ran back into her room.
"So, I'm finally going to meet this Abigail girl, huh?" My mother asked, sitting next to me at the kitchen table.
"Yeah, you will. But we're only friends," I told her, getting up from my seat to go into my bedroom.
"Not the way Anna talks about you guy," I heard her say. It was faint, but I could still hear her.
I turned around and leaned against the wall, "And what did Anna say?"
"Oh, not much. Just you getting nervous around her, you always blushing when someone mentions her, the way you look at her, the way you act around her. That kind of stuff." My mother that got up from the chair and got herself a glass of water, taking a drink from it before talking once again. "You know, that 6-year-old knows more about love than you and me combined."
"Tell me about it," I mumbled, looking at Anna's doorway. Just as my gaze locked onto her door, it opened to reveal Anna twirling around in a light blue dress. "Speak of the devil."
"Were you guys talking about me?" She asked, batting her eyes, trying to make herself look innocent.
"Yep," I said, walking up to her and kneeling to her height. "We were just talking about how you can't keep your mouth shut, you little stinker." I picked her up and swung her over my shoulder, spinning around in a circle to make her dizzy.
