There Once Was Life

Chapter 8

I wake up the next day,with the sun shining brightly through my window. I squint my eyes as I look through the window,I open it and stick my head out. I sit back on my bed as a nurse comes in with a breakfast tray. She sets it on my table that is attached to the bed. She is about to leave,when I say,"Sorry that I acted like that". She looks at me and says,"it's okay you just didn't know what was going on,it happens don't worry about. By the way you should eat",she says as she leaves. I don't know if that was sarcasm but I don't care. The tray of food holds,butter toast,eggs and an orange. I eat it all and am thankful for it,I haven't eaten that good in a while.

I toke a nap after breakfast because I can't go outside so all I do is eat,sleep,and maybe read. The nurse said I should read more,it's good for the mind when your healing.. apparently. Dylan has came to vist once today and went to vist Sam also. I'm just glad I have Dylan with me,if I didn't Sam would probably be dead,so would I.

I have healed,the bite has left a small ugly scar. I am now able to go outside,and Romania has said something about a job. She said she would talk to me about it later,when I'm ready. I walk outside,Sam holding my hand he is smiling as he says,"I'm glad I can see the sun again,it got dark while I was with momma,and daddy",he says. I look at him and frown. "You were with momma,and daddy"? I ask. He nods,"yes they said they loved me and told me that you would do your best to keep me safe". And they said they love you that they're sorry,for leaving you alone,Sam finishes. I nod and say,"I'm sorry too,and I love them too". What are you sorry for,Sam asks. We are sitting on a bench,under a tree. I look at him and say,"something that I wish I never did".

I walk Sam back to his room,he is still healing but I wanted him to see the sun. I stay in the room with him,reading,talking ,and laughing with him. In tell it gets dark and he falls asleep. I kiss his forehead and leave to my room. "Ali,wait",I hear Romania call from behind me. What? I ask. "I need to talk to you about the job",she says. I look at her and nod,"yeah okay". Follow me,she says as she walks away.

Romania leads me too a room that has a huge table with swirly chairs all around it. There is also a huge flat screen TV,that was showing the news. When we walk in she tells me to take a seat,she points at a chair by Dylan. I sit down and ask Dylan,"where is Thomas"? He already got his job,he's a doctor, he says. I was about to ask another question but Romania started talking. "So all you men here at this table are going to be soldiers,and soldiers go out side the wall to look for survivors,and bring then here for help". She says.I look at her confused,and she then says,"all of you here are new". Oh that's why they were just now getting jobs,the only thing is why am I the only girl? A guy looks at me and then Romania and asks,"why is there a weak girl on our team"? Romania looks at him and says,to be honest I think she's stronger then you. All the guys hoot,and holler,while me and Dylan just look uncomfortable. "Tonight I will call your names in groups and I will set up your group for jobs",she says. "Now you may all go and wait for your name to be called".

Faris,Even,Blain,and Alex come to the main room,the intercom says. I am sitting in my room waiting for my name to be called,Dylan's hasn't been called either which I'm glad for. I start to worry that my name won't be called but then I hear. Hayes,Gale,Dylan,and Ali come to main hall. I feel like I'm going to puke when I get up,and walk out the door.

We enter the room and Romania stands with a chart in her hands. She looks down at it and says,you four are going to be and group. "Are you serious"! Hayes yells. "You put me on the girls team on purpose",he says. Yes I did,you need to learn to respect woman,Romania says. Now head to the locker rooms and get ready,you are scouting at night this time. We are in the locker rooms,and I don't have a private place to get dressed,so I just go to the far corner and change. They gave us leather armor and hiking boots,for weapons we have a silenced pistol,and a some type of gun that I don't know of. I brought my good hand knife,they also gave us a big heavy duty bag. So I pack three water bottles,food,first aid kit,and a flashlight. After I am done I put my hair up in a ponytail,and look at everyone. Gale has brown hair,and grey eyes. Hayes has red hair,and green eyes. They are handsome men but no doubt Gale is mean too.

We are just stepping outside the gate,and start to walk towards the torn up part of the city. We have walked for three hours and are still walking till Gale says,"where are we even going,and who is leading"? I'm leading,so I think we should walk straight for two miles and then turn left and walk that way for five miles,Hayes says. "Whoever said you were leading,"Dylan says. I did now let's go,Hayes says and starts to walk. "Wait,why that specific way"? I ask. Because I said,now move.
