--Chapter 1

The wind howled, shaking the tree I leaned against, and scattered leaves every where. I shivered. What month is it? April? Finally. Warmth will come.

I didn't used to really mind the cold three weeks ago, but being forced to run from location to location to keep your own butt alive wasn't that 'fine'. Or warm.

I looked at the mountains where the sun was slowly peeking up awaking daylight.

I stood up weakly and crossed the log bridge i made to get to my little save place. Well safe enough, there was a gentle pond surrounding a piece of island, with a single oak tree on one of the corners. I had built up a four foot wall on the edge so that nothing could get in and if it tried, it would fail and slip in the mud. I also had a makeshift gate by a unsteady log bridge.

I walked for a minute wishing that I could live back in the 'old days' and graduate my last year of high school. I always wanted to be a builder, to construct things would be awesome.

I pulled out my grandfathers ancient 'ninja' sword as I liked to call it as a kid. He gave it to me before he died when I was fifteen, two and a half years ago. My father was Asian, but my mother was a good old country woman.

"Jeez Kev you scared me for a minuet there!" My fourteen year old brother Ben said.

"How?" I said with my back turned to him examining the sword.

I looked at him all cozy in his sleeping bag that was laying next to mine.

"I thought you were gone.." He jumped out of his sleeping bag.

I watched him put on his 'gear' that matched mine. It had forearm pads, knee pads, shin pads and about every other pad you can think of. Also a bullet proof vest just in case someone got feisty.

Better safe than sorry. Plus a infected couldn't bite though any of it.

I put my sword back into its holster and slung it on my back.

"Ben, I think were going to move out little 'camp'. I have a feeling something bad is coming." I said seriously walking back across the bridge standing next to him.

"Something bad." He repeated. I nodded. I leaned down and started to roll up my sleeping bag and buckled it onto my back pack. We gathered up the rest of the stuff and he clipped his machete to his gun belt, which held his pistol, an exact replica to mine.

"I though we found a great place here though Kev." He called me by my nick name.

"I thought to, but I just feel somethings... Off here." I shrugged and then started walking though a small forest to get to the old highway. I somethings travel on the highway because we find useful things in abandoned cars.

"Kev, where do you think mom and dad are right now?" He asked the same question every day.

"Ben don't worry, they're fine and when this all get settle out, we'll find eachother. Best we be on the move though, because I'm sure it increases out chance of finding them." I bit my lip hoping that what I just said was true.

We walked for a few hours and stopped to take a lunch break, that consisted of a granola bar and hello kitty fruit snacks. Classy right?

Around i would say 3:00 pm I saw another patch of forest, but that's not what caught my attention, there was dark grey smoke, just a thin strip of it, coming from around the middle if the forest. I stopped Ben and pointed to it.

"Ok I'm quizzing you little bro, what type of fire is that, and will it be safe to approach or not?" I try to keep him smart just in case he ever has to live like this alone. We can only pray that doesn't happen.

"Uh... I'm guessing that it's mostly green wet wood, and uh its a small campfire that can be approached, but never without caution?" He said the last words as if he was not sure. I smiled.

"Good job bro!" I patted his head and dug in my pocket for a peppermint candy.

He grinned wildly.

"But not until night time." I said raising an eyebrow before handing it to him.

"Wha... Why?" He said disappointed.

"If we get chased down you might choke on it, or have to spit it out and waist it." I told him firmly as if I were his dad. I try to be a good father figure.

He nodded and gently stuck it into his pocket.

"Now you ready to investigate?" He nodded unlatching his bullet proof helmet, and I did the same. We stuck them on enjoying the spoiledness we have.

We jumped over the road guard and jogged into the woods. When we got into a decent amount of space our fist infected guy appeared moaning delightful as if he could get any of this.

I carelessly slashed though his soggy head him falling to the ground with a thump.

He continued steal fully until I saw a clearing with a small fire and two clean tents in front of a RV, where a man sat with his rifle scoping out the area. Two people sat in lawn chairs with their backs to us, and one was roasting something good smelling on a stick. I'm sure more people were either in the RV or the tents.

I did ben and my hand signal we practiced. He swiftly loaded his pistol and I grabbed the rifle that was latched on my back next to my sword. I nodded to him and then charged into the open catching the guy on the RVs attention. He stood up alarmed. I pointed my rifle at him and my brother came out pointing both pistols at the people in the chairs.
