"Alright everyone, we need a leader. Who's the oldest?" Jamie asked while they were walking into town.
"I'm technically 56. Physically 17" Alice chimed in.
"Ha! We're 58!" Fabian and Gideon cheered. Physically, they were 18
"64/24." Jamie grunted. "I'm leading."
"Oh no you're not." Millard said snappily.
"What? How old are you?" Jamie said
Millard wished he hadn't opened his mouth. He and Alice were tied for looking the youngest, but Millard was much older.
".......87." he muttered.
Fabian and Gideon let out fake gasps, while Jamie and Alice looked mildly surprised.
"B-but Jamie can lead." he stuttered.
"Jeez, Alice. You're dating a guy over twice your age." Fabian taunted.
Millard was pleasantly surprised when she didnt correct him. The fact was that they liked each other, but neither had acted upon it. Millard wanted to, of course, but never had a moment alone with her.
"Alright. I'll be the boss." Jamie said happily.
******************Seven miles later, they got to their first train station. It would take them to another train station, which would take them to the airport, which would fly them to another airport with a shuttle, which would take them to a bus stop, which would take them to yet another train station, which would take them about 20 miles from the house, which they would go to by car. It was a four day trip including stopping for food and to sleep.
Millard was very nervous about them arriving to the house. What would the brothers say when they found out the theif was their father? He pushed the thought aside as they boarded the first train.
"How long is this train ride?" Millard asked.
"Hour and a half." Jamie said.
Millard sighed and sat next to Alice. She smelled softly of roses, and he wondered off she had put on perfume.
"You smell nice." he said, not quite realizing he was speaking aloud.
"Thank you." Alice laughed.
Millard's face turned red. Well, at least she thought it was funny. She leaned her head on his shoulder, and was soon asleep. She looked very peaceful, and Millard stayed very still so that he wouldn't wake her. He still couldn't quite grasp the fact that he was visible. He had enjoyed it at first, but now he started to miss it. It was what made him peculiar and different, and it was very helpful at times. He wanted to be invisible again, and was glad they were going to get their peculiarities back.
**********************
Millard had been on a plane just once before, and he had enjoyed it. They had just gotten off the second train and got to the airport. They got through security okay and got onto the plane. It was a six hour flight, but they sprung for first class seats, which would make the flight much more nice. Millard sat next to Alice, and noticed she looked nervous.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"I haven't had great experiences with planes." she said softly.
He held her hand to calm her down, which seemed to work. She leaned against him and fell asleep. It wasn't that late, why is she so tired? Millard thought. He noticed Jamie, who was sitting across the aisle with the twins, was nodding off too.
Soon enough, the plane landed and they boarded the shuttle. Alice was much less tense, and seemed well rested. The shuttle ride was short and unpleasant; Millard had somehow gotten a seat next to a somewhat large man who smelled strongly of onions, was eating an onion dish, and absolutely would not stop talking to him. Even if he didn't reply, the man kept talking. Millard was extremely glad when the shuttle stopped and he could get away from the onion man.
He gathered with his friends to discuss what to do next. Everyone but Alice was yawning loudly.
"Let's stop at a hotel for the night." Jamie decided.
The group agreed, and they walked to the nearest hotel. Jamie handled the transaction, and they went to their rooms. Each room had one bed, one bathroom, a couch, and a TV.
"Who's bunking with who?" Alice asked as they were going to their rooms.
"Fabian and Gideon in one room, they get the bed, I get the couch, and Millard and Alice get the other room...." Jamie trailed off "Actually, Fabian and Gideon can have their own room, and I'll take the couch in Millard and Alice's room."
Millard wasn't surprised that Jamie didn't want them to be alone together. Everyone started getting ready for bed when Millard realized he hadn't packed pajamas. He didn't have any, actually. He normally slept in the nude. He couldn't sleep in the clothes he was wearing, either. They smelled like the onion man. Alice and Jamie had already changed into their sleepwear.
"You're not sleeping in that, are you Mil?" Alice asked.
"Umm...I forgot to pack pajamas." Millard said sheepishly.
"How could you forget? What do you normally sleep in?"
"........nothing." Millard said softly.
Alice laughed
"Well you're not sleeping in that while I'm here, that's for sure. I'd give you my extra set, but they wouldn't fit. Ask the twins if they have any spares." Jamie said, settling into the couch with a large blanket.
Millard walked lengthy distance across the hall to Fabian and Gideon's room and knocked.
"Come in."
He opened the door to see Gideon sitting shirtless on the bed, watching TV. He normally wore baggy clothing, so Millard had never noticed how skinny he really was.
"Do you have any extra pajamas? I forgot to pack any."
"Sure."
Gideon heaved his bag onto the bed, dug out a pair of gray sweatpants and a plain black t-shirt and handed them to Millard.
"It doesnt look it, but that shirt is actually quite comfortable." he said.
Millard thanked him and noticed the cactus he saw Gideon pack sitting on the bedside table.
"What's with the cactus?"
Gideon smiled and picked it up.
"After my peculiarity showed itself, I killed almost every plant I touched. This was the first plant I touched without killing it. I named it Carl." He said proudly, handing it to Millard.
It didnt seem like much to Millard, but he knew it was important to Gideon. He looked at it and handed it back.
"Well, thanks for the pajamas." Millard said
"You're welcome. Good night Millard."
"Good night Gideon."
Millard walked back to his room and changed into the pajamas in the bathroom. It smelled nice for a hotel bathroom. He collapsed into bed and fell asleep instantly.
