⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Nathan broke into a sprint there and then, his trainers with the sole separated from the actual fabric slapping against the ground as he pushed everyone out of the way, Chloe and Lexee hot on his broken shoed heels. Both girls shared glances of worry as the saw the worry etched into the short brunette boys face.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Is she really dead?" Mackenzie whispered, appearing behind the pair as they waited for the elevator that had just left with Nathan to reappear. Her face was pale and there was still tears flowing down her cheeks in two steady rivers.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I don't know, do you know what her favourite film was?" Lexee, who didn't know the African-American that well, asked with a plain tone. Like Nathan had been when Kendall died, in Chloe's mind, she seemed to now be far too comfortable around the morbid subject of death.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"I seem to recall her telling me Frozen a few months ago," Mackenzie whispered as her face paled even further and her knees seemed to go weak beneath her petite body. Chloe threw her arms out and caught Mackenzie, who was now sobbing uncomfortably again. She was too young to be here, she had to go home. Why the police hadn't done anything to get them all home astounded Chloe, it would be much safer for all of them to go home and rest in their homes.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Frozen in the refrigerator," Chloe whispered as she trailed the back of her hand across her cheeks, wiping her tears away. They were in a state, and this couldn't go on for any longer. It seemed that every hour there was another fresh corpse on the ground and they were no closer to who was behind all of this than when they'd started. She'd believed that Nathan was going to be a help but after Maddie had tragically passed he'd been more of a hindrance and that was annoying the brunette who just wanted to find the person behind all of these deaths.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"So who's next?" Brynn said hastily, her lips pressed into a thin pick line and her eyes filled with tears of panic and fear, like everyone else. She was merely speaking the words that everybody else was wondering, although it sounded a little blunt and inconsiderate towards the late Nia.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Addison. We should've noticed that, not Addy," Chloe whispered, her eyes darting downwards as she ran a steady hand through her brown locks. Although she'd been christened Addison Moffat at birth, the name always seemed too posh for the rough and tumble girl, even when she was still in nappies. Her brother, Nathan, had come up with Addy when she was just a year old, and hadn't been able to pronounce her own name. Addy had always been her name in school registers, and some people didn't even know that her full name was Addison, some of these people being in the room right there and then.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Then Nia, so somebody beginning with an A," Lexee said, carrying straight on from where Chloe had left off. Both girls shared a knowing glance, smiles on their faces as they looked at each other. There wasn't many people left beginning with an A, in fact there only really was one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"No," Brynn whispered, clutching her boyfriend's hand tightly and burying her face into his broad shoulder. Alexander, the only person left with that fated letter at the fore point of his name, was standing stock still and his usually rather tanned face had paled to a ghostly white. His eyes seemed to lack life and tears brimmed along the outline of them.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Chloe felt a wave of sadness and pity for the couple, especially when she saw that nobody seemed to have really noticed the pair in tears. Nathan was kneeling on the ground next to Nia's body, looking at her corpse and tapping her arm delicately, her caramel skin tinged blue from the cold.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"It is cold in here," Mackenzie, who was hovering next to him, whispered. Her eyes still looked gaunt in her head and her hands were clenched tightly into fists, her knuckles a taut shade of white.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀"Then leave," snapped Nathan as he pulled at a strand of Nia's tight curls. It automatically sprung back into place once he'd pulled on it, the only shed of life still inside her that he'd seen. Mackenzie went silent, scuttling away from the preoccupied boy to beside Chloe, who seemed to be the most sympathetic person in that room. The tall brunette wrapped a slim arm around Mackenzie's shoulder and pulled the bereaved girl close to her.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It was in that second that Chloe noticed something, and furrowing her brow, she noted it. She definitely wouldn't forget this important clue.
