"Why?" asked Zane, who was hiding out in Garroth's room, peering over Garroth's shoulder. "Don't you dare call m-"
"Baby brother, this might actually work out," Garroth interrupted. "If Katelyn's dad approves you, then maybe you won't die when you two actually end up together... R-"
"I was going to say," Zane snarled pointedly. "Don't call me 'baby brother...'"
"And yet you didn't protest the fact I said you and Katelyn were gonna end up together?" noticed Garroth. "So you are going to ask her?"
"Wh-What?" yelped Zane, almost falling from his perch on Garroth's bed. "No! We uh.... Uh... We- Kinda- Gah! I don't have to explain myself to you!"
"Oooh!" Garroth said, ignoring the last part. "Are you already dating?"
"NO!" yelled Zane, grabbing his face with his hands. "Stop bothering me, big brother! And I do mean big. You're large. Not fat, but you're large..."
"Hey!" protested Garroth. "But seriously, you better be ready for dinner today. I'm pretty sure I heard Katelyn's dad yelling from down the street about if you look at Katelyn he's gonna kill you..."
"How am I supposed to not look at Katelyn?" sputtered Zane. "Do I wear a blindfold to dinner? Like Aaron did for a while? Do I just wear a full-face mask or something? That's insane!"
"Mhm, baby brother," Garroth agreed. "Look, just... pretend Katelyn is... Michi! And treat her that way at dinner! But let her know beforehand."
"Michi? But how- Katelyn is so much nicer and better than Michi. And I uh..." Zane trailed to a stop and turned red. "T-That doesn't matter! I mean- How do I even- I don't want to treat Katelyn like that! I only treat Michi like that! Because she's MICHI!"
"Do you want to die?" demanded Garroth. "This is so exciting! Unless he kills you! But that would ruin the ship... So just treat her like a friend the whole night."
Zane rolled off the bed. No. How would Zane treat Katelyn like a friend when she was so much more? Katelyn was so... kind, and her, and so walled-in. And Michi was annoying. This would be so hard, but if he managed to survive... Well, they'd both agreed if he survived...
Zane's phone lit up with a text from Katelyn: U die 2nite... I'll try... and Zane groaned. Even Katelyn had such little faith in this dinner occasion.
Really, though, other than imminent death, this dinner couldn't go too badly. Zane slid down the stairs on his butt (don't deny it - you guys love doing that) and left, checking Katelyn and her dad had left before entering his house.
Maybe he should wear something nicer.
Nah.
Zane changed his jacket. It looked about the same, but it wasn't. This one didn't have pockets! It was Zane's 'formal hoodie.' If Katelyn could see this, Zane thought. She would tell me it's stupid. And he remembered he had to remind her about having to act like he didn't like her.
Katelyn, he texted. I have to pretend we're barely friends at dinner. So I don't die. And a second later, Katelyn assured him it was okay, and that she had planned the same thing. Zane smiled at his phone.
Zane considered pulling his collar down for the dinner, but realized Katelyn's dad hadn't seemed to care about it. But, to be on the safe side, Zane pulled his collar down so his chin would be visible if he straightened his back.
