It was three thirty in the afternoon and I had decided to go grocery shopping. I only needed a couple things so it should be pretty quick. I was dressed in gray sweatpants along with a black long sleeve shirt. I was wearing my Nike flip flops and had a black hijab on. Black is my happy color I swear. I had already parked my car and I walked over to Jewel Osco. Grabbing a cart I headed to the produce section. Avocados! Yes. I grabbed a few of them and put them in my cart. Along with those I grabbed broccoli, strawberries and blackberries. I headed to the baking section to grab a few ingredients as well. Once I got what I needed, I made sure I got everything I wanted and headed to the cash register. Just as I was about to go to the register, my phone had started ringing.
"Hello?"
"Haneen, what are you doing today?"
"Hello to you too Yahya." I laughed "But anyway nothing really. I finished everything I needed to."
"Good because I want you to come over." He said.
I moved up the line and set my groceries on the moving table thing.
"Hello, how are you?" A males voice said. That voice was too familiar.
I looked up and froze.
"Haneen? You there?" Yahya asked.
"Uh, I'll call you later." I hung up the phone and nearly dropped it from how bad my hands were shaking. It was him. The guy who broke my heart in high school.
"Good, how are you?" I said not making any eye contact.
"Haneen?" Oh no.
I looked up and tried fighting the tears.
"It's been so long. How are you?" He smiled.
"Yeah. And I'm fine. Thanks for asking."
"You haven't changed a bit. Still the same girl I remember." Well here come the tears.
I quickly wiped them so he wouldn't see and replied.
"Could say the same about you." I told him. Gosh his green eyes haven't changed. It's like once I look into them I remember everything that had happened with us. Good and bad.
"Are you seeing anyone?" He asked.
"Yeah, I am. He's amazing." I told him. "How about you?"
"Yeah, I'm actually engaged." He told me. No way.
"Congrats. Do I know her?" I asked.
He looked down and said "To Sara."
My mouth opened. Wow. Sara was the girl he dating while he was with me.
I quickly payed him not even grabbing my change. That was supposed to me not her. It's not fair how things end up. I left as fast as I could.
"Nice seeing you again." He told me as I walked off.
I put the groceries away and got in my car. Wow, way to ruin my mood. I plugged my phone into the aux and opened Spotify. 'A Sky Full of Stars' by ColdPlay came on. I sang along as I pulled in to McDonald's. I ordered some fries and made my way over to Yahya's house. Maybe I'll cheer up when I see him.I rang the door bell waiting for him to open the door. I had my phone and fries with me too. Ahmad ended up opening the door for me. I held up the McDonald's bag and said "Look what I got." He laughed and told me Yahya will be here in about ten minutes. So me and Ahmad ate our fries while we waited for Yahya.
"You know something?" He said as he ate a fry.
"Yeah?"
"You really changed Yahya. Before you he would date all these girls and wouldn't stay on track with his religion. But now he's with you and I see him pray all the time and he seems happier, ya know? Like he smiles more and isn't as aggressive." He told me.
"Really. That's good to here then. He really is a good person. I'm glad I met him." I said as I bit my fry.
"Speak of devil." Ahmad said as Yahya walked through the door.
He came by where we were sitting and sat on the couch with head on my lap.
"Hi." He smiled as he looked up at me.
He's so cute. I kissed his cheek while I heard Ahmad fake gag.
"You're just jealous that you can't have my girl."
"Whatever floats your boat." He laughed.
I gave Yahya some fries and he thanked me for it. I was running my hand through his soft curls while he was on his phone. Before I knew it, he took a picture of me lacking and posted it on his snapchat.
"Oh my god ew!" I laughed when he showed me it.
He sat up and grabbed me so I was laying on top of him.
"Shush you're perfect." He kissed me forehead.
"You're too kind." I put my head on his chest while his hands were on my back.
"Get a room!" Ahmad groaned.
"Boy shut up and order some pizza." He did as his brother told and ordered us some pizza.
The moment was perfect with us just holding each other until I realized I forget to put my groceries at my house. I groaned.
"What's wrong?" He asked
"I completely forgot about the groceries I picked up today."
"Just have your brother pick them up." He said.
"He's thirteen. He can't drive." I sat up getting ready to put my shoes on when he pulled me back down.
"No. Stay." He whined.
"I'll be back. I promise I'll be quick."
"Fine but when you get back we're cuddling." He laughed.
"Can't wait." I joked.
