Aroooo!
I listen as my howl echoes through the valley. Birds flee the nearby trees their wings flapping to the beat of my heart.
Calm down Rook, it's just a few birds. I scold myself silently for being so on edge.
Trying to relax I close my eyes and sniff the air while swiveling my ears around slowly. I inhale, picking up the scents of pine, deer, squirrel, and moss. The soft hum of a fly's wings reach my ears as it repeatedly tries to land on the deer's hide.
A howl in the distance pulls me to attention, I perk my ears and tilt my head, "This is my valley, why are you here?" I can't help but roll my eyes, "I am just passing though. I am not a threat." The wolf takes a long time to reply, I suspect that he is discussing the matter with his pack, "Very well you may pass through." I give him my thanks and pad forward at a steady trot.
Inside of the valleys' forest, I keep my senses on alert in case one of the pack members decides to take me by surprise. A ways into the forest I come across a pond with willow trees circling its far edge, and lily pads dotting the water's surface. Slowly I move to the water's edge and sit down, staring at the image of a large, beautiful black wolf with glowing red eyes.
Geez, I'm not exactly the friendliest looking wolf.
I pull my lips into the best smile I can and laugh at the reflection as it tries to do the same and ends up with a creepy looking snarl. I stop laughing when I catch a movement to my right, not wanting to seem afraid I slowly turn my head to the small ash grey wolf that had emerged from the forest. I watch him as he slowly moves forward, his steps are sure, but his golden-yellow eyes give away his nervousness. He stops a few paces away from me and raises his tail and head.
So, he is the Alpha...how pathetic.
After a second of staring at each other silently he seems to realize that I am not the least bit intimidated and sits down looking anywhere but into my eyes.
It's wise of him to feel uncomfortable. I am a very high ranked wolf after all, but I guess I'll give the little alpha a break.
I look away and examine a willow tree that is leaning so dangerously that one of its branches are impaling the ponds surface.
The Alpha clears his throat, but I don't look back at him, "My name is Broach and I am the leader of the River Valley Pack." I answer with little to no emotion in my voice, "I'm Rook."
The wolf named Broach fidgets a bit unsure of what to do next, with a sigh I look at him out of the corner of my eye, "You can tell the rest of the pack that they don't have to surround the pond and come out, I'm not in the mood for a bloodbath right now anyway." Broach looks up at me his eyes quizzical, but he turns his head slightly and yips. Seconds later, nine wolves all different shades of grey emerge from around me and sit behind Broach. A cloud grey female wolf sits right beside Broach, her eyes raking me up and down.
Let me guess, she is his mate. As if to prove my guess, the female licks Broach's cheek.
This is the first chapter of my first book on Wattpad so give me your thoughts so far XD
Above is Rook.Note from Author in 2023: Noticed that the first 11 chapters had no spaces and a ton of errors in general so I'm going back through. Some of the wording may be different. ♥
