I travel a ways into the woods before I catch the scent of a bull elk and follow its trail. It leads me into an empty clearing except for the bull elk grazing in the middle and a white figure that is crouching low and inching towards it slowly.

 What the...

Suddenly the bull elk bolts, and the white figure goes after it. My eyes widen as I take in the sight of the white wolf chasing down the elk, her electric blue eyes full of determination.

MATE! I scream in my head. MY MATE!

I run after the two at an easy lope, and I catch up in time to see my mate leap at the bull elk's neck, but he kicks back at her, and she tumbles to the ground. Rage begins to boil inside of me, running through my veins like lava.

 How dare that...

I let a loud, ferocious growl escape my throat and both my mate and the bull elk freeze, their eyes locking onto me in the clearing.  I continue to growl furiously as I slowly approach the elk, which doesn't move but just stares at me, his knees shaking. Once I'm standing right in front of him, I trust my head up under his jaw and clamp my jaws around his throat until the satisfying sound of his neck snapping reaches my ears. I then let his lifeless body fall to the ground in a heap.

That's what you get for hurting my mate.

I go to grab the elk's throat again to carry it back to the den but stop at the sound of a soft voice, "Who are you?" I turn to look at my mate and just stare without a word. "I asked you a question!" I can sense that she is starting to get agitated, so I turn my back to her.

"It's rude to demand someone's name without stating your own." I reply in a monotone. I pick up the elk and start to drag it away towards the den. "My name is Ivory!" She yells from behind me. I stop and look at her over my shoulder then jump into the woods with the elk lifted off the ground completely.

About an hour later, I near the den clearing with the throats of two bull elk and three foxes in my mouth. I stop as the sound of a familiar frantic voice reaches my ears, "Brother!" She pants. "I found another wolf in our territory! And she is very dangerous, we must do something!" The voice yells at Broach, and as I peer thought the bushes I see my mate, Ivory, pacing anxiously while Broach watches her calmly. "It's alright Ivory there is nothing to worry about." Ivory looks at him like he is growing horns, "But brother..." I step into the clearing, and she falls silent.

The pack stops what they are doing and look at me in surprise, but Kia breaks the tense silence as she stumbles to me, yipping cheerfully. "Wow you're a really good hunter, and strong too!" She licks her lips and looks at one of the bull elk longingly. I set the bodies down and smile at her, "Hungry?" I ask knowing full well that she is. "Yes, really hungry!" She whimpers.

I nuzzle her head before ripping off a chunk of a bull elk and chewing it thoroughly, then I lean down. Kia opens her mouth and I drop the now soft meat into her mouth, and she whimpers in joy, "Yummy! Thank you!" I give her a crooked smile as she wags her tail.

Picking up the other elk, I carry it to Broach and Willow, passing a stunned Ivory on the way. I set it down and nod my head respectfully. "I didn't know who had and hadn't eaten so I brought what I could find nearby." Broach looked at me and then at all of my kills and Willow did the same. "T..thank you Rook, you weren't kidding when you said you hunted better alone." He says with obvious fear and perplexation in his eyes.

Wow, I guess it's not normal for wolves to kill and carry this much.

I hear a strangled bark behind me and turn to see Ivory with her tail raised slightly and her ears pinned back aggressively, "What are you and why are you here!?" She growls but her confidence is wavering. I sit, unbothered. "My name is Rook, and I am staying in this territory until the full moon." I give her an innocent smile, "As for your other question, I am a wolf. Of course."

She stares at me lost for words, but she soon regains her earlier confidence. "You can't fool me, Rook. A normal wolf can't kill the way you did." Her voice drips with hatred as she says my name and I immediately stand up to my full height glaring down at her with my teeth bared. "Don't you dare disrespect my name, Beta!"

Ivory visibly shudders and lowers to the ground, as Broach steps forward and nudges me in the shoulder. "Please calm down, Rook" He begs, "Please don't cause a fight in front of the pups."

I close my eyes and exhale loudly, "I'm sorry for disturbing your peace, I shall be on my way." I nod to them again and walk past Ivory, ignoring her completely. "Wait, what do you mean on your way?" Willow asks from behind me. I stop and turn to face her, "I need to look for a vacant den or cave to spend the night." Willow's eyes fill with concern, "You should stay here with the pack. You may not be a member, but it is still safer to stay here." I give her an almost soft smile, "Thank you for your kindness, Willow, but I will be alright on my own."

I turn back to almost step on Kia. She smiles up at me, "Where are you going, Rook?" She asks, her tail wagging excitedly. Her brothers and sisters rush up to stand behind her. There are five in total.

"I'm going to look for a temporary home." I reply truthfully. It's never been my thing to lie to pups. Her tail stops wagging, and it droops sadly. "Why can't you stay here with us?" She whimpers. Her brother, Fern, walks up beside her and nuzzles her ear.

"Do you really want me to stay, Kia?" She looks up at me with hope in her eyes, "Yes."

That's all I needed. I scoop her up in my mouth and carry her to the outside of the den, laying down and placing her between my legs, "Alright, I'll stay." I lick her on the top of the head and smile, then I'm attacked by the rest of the pups. I can't help but chuckle a little as they all bury themselves into my fur and soon fall fast asleep.

Willow walks up to me and lays by my side looking at her pups lovingly. "They seem to really like you, especially Kia. They haven't cuddled with me or anyone since they were newborns." She lays her head on her paws so that her face is near her pups and I can feel her breath on my leg.

"You have beautiful children" I say softly. "And you are a great mother. Besides, when a pup is growing up, they tend to want to seem strong and independent. It's not that they don't like or want to cuddle with you." I give her a reassuring smile and lay my head down as well and close my eyes.

"Thank you." I hear her whisper softly before I drift into the darkness.

Above is Ivory
