Chapter 41

Rook’s Pov

I glance around me, peering into the dark forest cast in shadow by the thick canopy above. I can hear birds singing somewhere above the branches, the agile mammals not daring to fly below risking their lives by swooping in and out of the reaching tree arms. Shifting my gaze to the forest floor I take a whiff of a few daisies as I walk over them. Their smell isn’t particularly sweet but the fragrance is soothing all the same. As I bend down to smell a particularly dense patch of the little white flowers, my snout is hit hard by a rolling object. Lifting my head with a startled and somewhat hurt growl, I look down to find Noir lying face down in the flower patch his rump and tail skyward.

“Noir...what are you doing?” I ask him with a questioning tilt of my head.

The little pup rocks his body to fall back into a sitting position and shakes his head dizzily. He then looks up at me, tilting his head as far back as he can so that he can see my face.

“Sorry, mommy. I was coming to smell the flowers with you and tripped…” he says with a whine.

Ivory appears from beside me and licks the top of the pups head caringly before nuzzling her nose into his little cheek, “It’s alright, sweetheart. It was just an accident. Besides, mommy is tough and won’t be hurt by having her nose hit by a little fluff ball like you.” she says with a chuckle and glance at me.

I roll my eyes and move around them to keep walking along the invisible trail that is now very familiar to me. I can see the small break in the canopy just up ahead letting in a large pool of warm sunlight to grace the lush foliage.

“Ivory.” I say letting her know that I need her attention.

“Yes?” I turn my head to find my mate looking at me with her ears perked and ready.

“The clearing up ahead, that’s where the Sun God will appear. Mother is still unclear when that will be but just in case I am not here remember where this is. When he descents a heat wave should blow through the forest so you will know when to retrieve him.” I say nodding my head in the direction of the clearing I am referring to.

My mate frowns and glances at the clearing before looking up at me in concern, “Why wouldn’t you be here?”

I hate making her worry...but life is unpredictable

“I’m just being cautious.” I say with a smile.

She tilts her head at me but doesn’t press the subject further, instead deciding to trot ahead and stand in the middle of the sunlit opening. She looks up trying to see the sky but blinks away tears as the light burns her eyes. I chuckle and follow her with Noir beside me gawking at my mate.

“Mama’s so pretty.”

I look down at him with raised eyebrows, a smirk crawling its way onto my face. Looking at my gorgeous mate once more to ogle at her radiance I nod my head in agreement, “You’re right. She is stunning.”

“Kia too.” he says bringing me to a halt.

“Oh?” I ask hum.

I already know that they are mates but still. This is the perfect opportunity to find something to tease him about for the rest of his life

He nods his head, his ears showing his bush, “Yeah…. Don’t you think so too, Mommy?”

I chuckle and shake my head, “You know that your Mama is the only one in my eyes.” I stop and nudge his little body with one of my paws, “But, Kia is definitely a good one for you.”

He smiles, pleased with my answer and trots on ahead till he is standing in the clearing with my mate. Seeing him beside her makes me want to have pups of our own. Though I certainly see Noir as my pup, I would like to have pups born of both Ivory and I.

I’ll have to talk to her about it...

Sorry that it is so short. I had to attend a funeral this week and just wasn't feeling it but I promised a chapter a week.
