Veronica had almost reached the beach when she was stopped by her best friend.
"Hey, Veronica! How's your summer going?" Mallory was using a playful tone.
"My summer is going great. I was hired as a life guard and I have a possibility at swimming in the Olympics." Veronica showed Mallory the letter.
"Wow! That sounds awesome. You compete on Monday. I'll give you a lift." Mallory had a mischievous look on her face. "I have been going to the library daily. It gets me out of the heat and I can read. However, I think I'll join you at the beach today."
"Sounds good. Let's go have some fun." Veronica and Mallory began walking to the beach.
"Fun? I was thinking more like a surprise. Fun does sounds good though." Mallory still looked like she was up to something. "By the way, if I were to start drowing you would save me, right?"
"Of course, I do need that ride, you know." Veronica was now laughing. That was until she saw a huge ship had crashed onto the ocean shore. Veronica almost raced over to the ship, but Mallory pulled her back.
"Oil spill. I wouldn't want to step in that." Mallory pointed to the now black sand. Now where would Veronica swim?
