♢ SELENIUM is an essential component of a key enzyme which exhibit antioxidant activity.

♢ It is needed in small daily amounts.

♢ Selenium is necessary for the normal growth and development of the body. It helps iodine in thyroid function.

♢ Selenium protects cell membranes and other intracellular structural membranes from oxidant damage.

♢ Along with Vitamin E, zinc, beta carotene, and vitamin C, selenium may be beneficial in inflammatory conditions and some degenerative diseases.

♢ The antioxidant effect may also benefit the cardiovascular system and protect against cancer.

♢ Selenium deficiency is more common in areas of low soil selenium, and also in infants  who are deprived of breast milk.

♢ Most selenium in foods is lost during processing and refining. Food sources of selenium are yeast, butter, liver, lamb/chicken, egg yolk, sea food, wheat germ, whole grains, nuts, molasses, and some vegetables (broccoli, cucumbers, mushrooms and onions).
