♢ SODIUM is the positive ion found in the blood, body fluids, and in every cell.
♢ It helps to regulate the body fluid balance and the acid-base balance as well.
♢ An adult requires minimum 500 mg of sodium daily. But due to our dietary habit we consume much more of sodium by salty food and snacks.
♢ Excess sodium in diet is the main cause of hypertension ( high blood pressure), premenstrual problems, and toxemia during pregnancy.
♢ Sodium deficiency is less common. Profuse sweating, vomiting, and diarrhoea causes sodium loss leading to problems like fatigue, loss of appetite, apathy, and muscle twitching.
♢ Sources of high amounts of naturally occurring sodium are cheese, sea fish, and shellfish. Processed foods like meats, sausage, snacks ( chips, crackers, peanuts), ready-made sauces, gravies, salad dressings, ketchups contain lots of sodium.
