♢ Zinc is essential for the synthesis of protein, DNA and RNA. It is required for growth in all stages of life.

♢ With the help of Vitamin A zinc maintains healthy skin cells, and helps wound healing by promoting collagen formation.

♢ Zinc is also used in a variety of immune problems.

♢ Zinc is fairly nontoxic. Excess intake may cause some immune suppression, dizziness, drowsiness, increased sweating, muscle incoordination, and alcohol intolerance.

♢ Zinc deficiency is more common and complex. A deficiency during childhood can cause retarded growth, during pregnancy, birth defects.

♢ Other symptoms are appetite loss, reduced resistance to infections, and skin changes.

♢ Sources of zinc are animal foods, oysters, red meat, fish, egg yolks, and milk products.
