"Carter..." She murmured as she turned beside him. Her hand landed on his stomach. Ray lay as still as he could, trying not to wake her.
She was having one of those dreams again. Where she would fall in love with her destined soulmate, again and again, in ancient Egypt, in the roaring twenties, in WWII. She would spend multiple lifetimes with him, her eyes closed, while he would be forced to listen.
Ray stared at the ceiling, waiting for the inevitable. He felt her jerk, and he closed his eyes as Kendra sat up suddenly, gasping. He was used to this now. This was when she would die in the hands of Vandal Savage in her dreams. Before, he used to comfort her. Now, he couldn't. He knew he wasn't supposed to anyway.
Kendra, unlike the other nights, got out of bed. Ray almost peeked at her but he lay still, waiting for her to go back to sleep.
However, she didn't. He heard her walk around bare feet, to get a glass of water. Was the dream that horrible? He wanted to leap up and hug her, but he didn't.
Through his left ear, he heard her pad back to the bed and sit down.
"Ray..." She whispered. "I love you. Thank you."
She burst into soft tears. He opened his eyes, seeing the beautiful woman he had fallen in love with so dearly, he knew he had to say something—
"But I can't do this." Kendra took off her engagement ring, and placed it with a small clatter on the bed side table. "I just can't."
Ray put his hand back down, and closed his eyes again, trying to ignore Kendra's muffled sobs.
The next morning Ray woke up wearily, having been awake most of the night. Kendra, watching TV while eating cereal, turned around and waved at him. The ring sparkled on her finger.
"I was going to wake you and eat at the kitchen but it turns out Snart and Sara wanted to ambush Jax with a morning food fight so they kicked me out." She grinned. "I brought you some food though."
Ray smiled too. "Food fights, huh? How immature are they?"
He could play this game of facade too.
