Massachusetts is cold. When we walk out of the airport, the wind is blowing so it makes it seem even colder. I glance around for my brother's car. He should be here by now, I told him to be here by about ten minutes ago. A car pulls up and parks slightly in front of us but it's not my brother's car so I pull my coat tightly around my chest as I look around some more. Liam still radiates heat from next to me so I get closer to him."He should be here. I told him to be at this exit." I check the time.
A car door slams loudly so I glance over to see that it's the car that just parked in front of us. I squint at the person that just got out and see that it's my brother. I race toward him for a hug immediately. His hugs are one of the best. "Ethan!" I wrap my arms around his neck and shut my eyes, burying my face in his shoulder.
"Did you get a new car? When did you get a new car?" I ask, words muffled by his coat. His releases me and laughs with his hands still on my waist.
"A couple weeks ago. You've just been so busy and I forgot to mention it."
"How do you forget to mention a new c—"
"You must be Liam. I've heard a lot about you." he cuts me off and greets my boyfriend with an outstretched hand.
"Yes, I've heard a lot about you as well." Liam takes his hand.
"I'd interrogate you now, but we're standing in the cold so it'll have to wait."
Ethan grabs my bags from the sidewalk and walks away as Liam chuckles expectantly because I gave him a fair warning on the plane. "You were right." He wraps his arm around me and begins to walk his single suitcase to the car. "Of course I was right. He's my brother, I grew up with him!" I respond, laughing. His arm falls from my shoulders so that he can lift his suitcase into the trunk. Ethan has gotten in the car and started it already.
"Well yeah, but I was hoping it was an exaggeration. I don't know about him, but if I had a sister, no guy would be good enough for her to me."
"My brother is different, and so are you. He'll be tough at first but... just give him a day or two and you'll be 'one of the guys.'" He shuts the trunk. "I promise."
Liam nods, grabs my waist, and leans down to kiss me. I can feel his warmth radiating onto my skin as our bodies press together. I'm just placing my hand on the back of his neck when the car horn honk and blasts us apart. I sigh and back away from Liam to get in the passenger's seat. As I pull open the door, I mouth, "Later." and then duck into the black car.
My brother doesn't look at me as he pulls out of the airport lot, but I look at him. It looks like he's matured so much since I left. His brown hair is neat and seems darker in the lighting. His green eyes are almost identical to mine but hold less passion for things like arts. He's always been very handsome like our father, but I had to grow into my looks.
"Mom is so excited to see you. It's all she could talk about all morning."
"I'm excited to see her too."
My parents' home is not far from the airport so in ten minutes, we're pulling into the driveway. It seems like it's been too long since I've been here. So long, in fact, that I'd almost forgotten what it looked like. Liam grabs a couple bags and my brother grabs the rest, leaving me with none. Even though I am indeed grateful that they're such gentlemen, I feel bad that they have to carry such heavy bags. It doesn't seem to phase them though, and it occurs to me that the bags probably only seem heavy to me.
The house is warm and smells like cookies. Liam sits the bags down by the door and looks around the house in awe. "Mama?" I call, starting toward the kitchen. If there are cookies baking, she must be in there. I grab Liam's hand and intertwine our fingers so that I can pull him along. As soon as I round the corner that leads to the kitchen, I see that she's already rushing towards us from the sound of my voice. Her arms wrap around me and squeeze.
"There's my girl."
When we release each other, I notice that her long brown hair now has gray strands shining through, and I think for a moment that she's too young to have gray hair. I realize then that she's in her early fifties by now. Still, she radiates beauty and safety, something that I wish to represent for someone someday. I grab Liam's hand again and give it a squeeze.
"This is my boyfriend, the one I told you about on the phone." I say, motioning to him.
Liam chuckles and says, "The way you said that made it sound like you have multiple boyfriends, Viv." jokingly. I slap his arm playfully and laugh.
"Oh hush." I say.
My mother laughs along with us and looks at Liam with a smile that reveals the wrinkles by her eyes. "Well aren't you handsome? Vivianne, you didn't mention how handsome he is, I would have looked nicer." she jokes. I laugh again.
"Don't cougar out on us, ma." says Ethan, walking up behind Liam and I.
"Are you sure it's not too late?" I look up at my brother with raised eyebrows.
He chuckles, shrugging as Liam reaches out to shake my mother's hand. "Very nice to finally meet you Mrs. Hartley." says Liam politely. She glances at me in surprise and then takes his outstretched hand in hers. I can almost hear her already saying, "He's handsome and has good manners? Ooh, he's a keeper Vivianne, I know he is!" At that thought, I giggle.
"Such a sweetheart," she says to me. "Oh and please, call me Carolyn."
