The next morning, I wake up at ten pm which is more than two hours late to filming. I swear quietly to myself as bolt out of bed, mumbling things about why my alarm didn't go off and cursing technology. I'm about to call Liam to tell him to let everyone know that I'm on my way but I find that I have seven text messages, several twitter notifications, and three missed calls instead. One text is from Jen, two are from Josh, and four are from Liam.
Jen: "Where are u? Gary's pissed!"
Josh: "Everyone's looking for you are you ok?"
"You and Liam's pictures are everywhere!"Liam: "Goodmorning gorgeous"
"We're in trouble!"
"Are you okay?"
"Pick up your phone you're scaring everyone."Oh shit. Shit shit shit. I quickly call Liam with shaking fingers. He answers on the second ring. "Vivianne? Where are you?" he asks immediately. "I overslept and my phone was on silent. What's happening?" I climb out of bed and go into the bathroom to start getting ready as he answers. "Gary's pissed... at both of us, and we aren't allowed to do any filming until he speaks with us." he tells me. My heart does a couple flips, but I manage to stay calm.
"I'm on my way. I'll be there in like fifteen minutes I promise!"
I throw my hair back into a high ponytail, put on a pair of sweats, brush my teeth quickly and then I'm out of the door. As I drive a little above the speed limit, I tell Siri to text Liam, Jen, and Josh to let them know that I'm on my way. I can only imagine how bad things are going to be when I get there. First, my face is printed on every magazine and then I show up two hours late, no wonder why Gary's pissed.
I half walk, half jog through the front door right past the fat cop. When I get to the sets, everyone is bustling around but not really doing anything. A couple of people notice me, but I ignore them and go straight to Liam's dressing room. After I knock, the door swings open in seconds. When he sees me, relief flushes over his face. I stretch up to my tip toes and wrap my arms around his neck in a hug.
"What's going on? Where's Gary?" I ask him when we pull away.
"He's in his office." he answers as he steps out of his dressing room and shuts the door behind him.
As we walk toward Gary's large office in the back of the building, I realize that we could be fired. Anxiety courses through my veins at the thought and it makes me want to be sick. I never thought I would like being an actress, but I do. This movie is my chance to get my name out in the world and open opportunities for me as something more than just a cosmetologist. I reach forward and grab Liam's hand to relax.
Gary looks up from what he's writing when he hears the door shut. He sees that it's us and sits back in his chair, frowning. "Sit." is the first thing he says. Liam moves first, prompting me to move forward too by placing a hand on my lower back and giving me a reassuring look. We each sit in a chair across from the director's desk and watch as he reaches into a drawer. He pulls out a magazine and holds it up. On the cover, there's a picture of Liam and I leaving his house.
"Explain what this is." he demands.
Liam takes the magazine from Gary and looks at the front cover more closely before answering with, "It isn't what the tabloids made it out to be, I can tell you that." and placing it back on the desk. I try to defend our cause with honesty but it comes out as a lie. "It was nothing, I swear. Liam and I hung out as friends yesterday and he drove me home, that was all." I say. The director raises his eyebrows at me. "That was all?" he repeats, staring straight at me. I nod quickly, even though I know that almost every single word in that sentence was a lie.
He must have expected me to say that because he has another magazine ready to go, this one with a picture of us from my porch on the cover. I'm whispering in Liam's ear and his hands are on my waist. It would look pretty more than friendly to anyone that saw it. "I guess you have an explanation for this one too then." He continues to look at me. He must have expected me to say something in our defense, but I keep my mouth shut this time because there's nothing I can say to explain what I know is true.
I look at Liam, half expecting him to say something but he doesn't. He just sighs and massages his temple with his right index finger. Gary nods in obvious disappointment, but his expression quickly changes to anger. "I don't want anymore ridiculous magazines about you two until this movie is over." he says, throwing the magazine down. It slides across the desk and falls on the ground. I stare at it so that I don't have to look anywhere else.
"That means no more "hanging out", no more going inside each other's houses, nothing. From now on you have no connection to each other besides this movie. Strictly business. And if I happen to hear another word about Liam Hemsworth and Vivianne Hartley, you will not be filming The Hunger Games anymore. Understand?"
"No no no, Gary, don't punish him this was all my fault. I got too drunk at the cast dinner and he—"
"I don't care about who's fault it was. Dating or not, I care about what people are saying about this movie and so far your relationship is not putting us in a very nice light." he interrupts.
I feel tears burning my eyes so stand up and leave the room quickly before he sees me cry. I never let anyone see me cry. Liam stays behind and tries to talk to Gary some more but I know it won't help, and I know that isn't very positive but it is honest. If Gary's mind set on something, there is no changing it. For that reason, I find myself wiping tears away from my cheeks as I walk down the hallway aimlessly.
