The sound of my alarm clock blasts in my ears. I grab my phone and shut it off. This is my last week of school. It's not the end of the year. It's actually not even the middle of the year. My family is packing up and moving to Minnesota. I will miss my friends, and the place I grew up in. But, I love the idea of a fresh start. I could completely change who I am, they would never even know. This could be a lot of fun.
I sit up and rub my eyes with the backs of my hands. My eyes roam around my room. I hope I have a cool room in Minnesota. I pull back the white comforter and find the floor with my feet. A thump comes from my brothers room. He probably fell out of bed. I open my closet door and scan the racks of clothes. I decide on a army green crop top, some dark denim jeans, white toms, an army green beanie, and a leather coat trimmed with fur along the hood.
My makeup sits orderly on my vanity. I never wear extravagant makeup. I've always kept it simple. I brush a small amount of some cheap highlighter along my cheekbones. For my eyes, I blend some light brown eyeshadow and tad bit of dark brown into my crease. I draw a thin line of brown eyeliner around my eye. My fingers smooth my eyebrows into place and I look my self over. A few strokes of mascara and some nude lip balm completes my look. My grey eyes pop from the eyeliner and mascara and my skin is pale and pasty.
I brush my hair and detangle it. It's as flat as paper and has no volume. But I'm incredibly thankful my bangs have grown long. When I move to Minnesota, I will wear my bangs differently. I'm going to switch it up.
After smiling to myself in satisfaction of my look for the day, I grab my bag and pull the straps around my shoulders. I grab my phone and straighten my bed and close my door as I walk out of my bedroom.
I step out on the wooden platform stationed outside my door and walk down the three steps that follow. Jason walks out his bedroom just after me and I look his outfit over. He wears a white shirt underneath a brown coat matched with some dark blue jeans similar to mine and some black toms.
"Trying to match me, little brother?" It came out more as a statement then a question. He laughed and punched my arm lightly. I ruffled his hair causing him to throw his hands up and immediately smooth it back down. We walk down the hall to the biggest part of the house which includes the living room, kitchen, and laundry room. My father sits with one leg folded on top of the other and he holds a newspaper in his hands. My mother roams around the kitchen making sure everyone has breakfast. She smiles at Jason and I as we sit down at the table. She sits a plate of strawberries, blueberries, and other fruits in front of me. She's always wanting us to eat healthy. I quickly at my fruit and Jason hurries to keep up with me.
"Okay mom, we're leaving for school." I assure her and she kisses my forehead before doing the same to Jason. My father shouts a "Have a great day at school," before we head out the door.
I climb into the driver's side and wait for Jason to shut the passenger door before I crank up the car. It's freezing outside and snow covers the ground. Jason turns the heat on full blast and I shoot him a thankful look.
"Have you finished packing up your room?" Jason breaks the silence. "Not yet, I don't want to really. I'm excited for the move but I just.. can't get around to packing everything up." I blabbered, keeping my eyes on the road. He nodded and continued the topic, "Me either. It's just weird cause we grew up here. It's all we've known." He sighs.
The windshield wipers lightly scraping the glass as they wipe away the tiny snowflakes, makes an oddly satisfying sound. I don't even have to think about where I'm driving. I've gotten used to the path we take to school which isn't very complex. We live about 10 minutes from the school and I take the same roads everyday.
We finally pull into the school and I park in the middle so it's not too far away. We get out of the car and immediately pull our hoods over our heads and walk close together to the school. As we walk inside we shake our coats off and pull our hoods down. Jason smiles at me and hugs me before saying goodbye. I love the relationship I have with my brother. We don't fight really and we get along quite well. I don't see that too often. I walk down the crowded halls and find my first class, Literature. As I walk in, I immediately spot Sam, Jerry, and Margaret, my best friends. I join them in the middle desks and hang my bookbag on the back of my chair. We always sit together and walk to our classes together. We're a pretty tight knit group. I will miss them a lot.
