"It's too early for this, Cynthius," I grumbled, rubbing my tired eyes as he led Damien and I down the unmarked, white hallways.
"Don't blame me," he immediately responded, throwing a grin over his shoulder as he strode ahead. "I'm not the boss here."
From the corner of my eye, I saw Damien rub the back of his neck and attempt to stifle a yawn.
He hardly would have slept last night, I realised with a small frown.
"Couldn't Isaac have waited until later? Damien just got back from a mission and-"
"It's okay, cara mia," Damien gently and briefly reached out and touched my hand, his fingers wrapping around my own for a quick second.
"We've got a new recruit," Cynthius simply stated with a shrug, as though that were explanation enough. "Also, you're lucky it was me who came in on you two. You really have to be more careful," he added and I felt my cheeks burn as he pushed into Isaac's office.
Damien's hand went to the small of my back as we both walked inside and then, as expected, his hand dropped and his expression grew serious.
As soon as I entered, my gazed focused on Isaac and the flickered to the tall man, dark-haired, amber eyed man standing beside him, a shiver running down my spine when our eyes met and his had lips quirked upwards.
"This is Sean. He's been away on a mission overseas but he's back for a while now. He's the second in command," Isaac, as always, skipped the pleasantries and got straight to the point as he bluntly addressed me. "Sean, this is Juliet," at the steely introduction, Sean bowed his head and I offered him a tight, polite smile.
"You may have already heard that Rhea, Bronte and Xena have left our compound," Isaac continued and I stiffened, feeling another, new pair of eyes on me. Instinctively, I glanced over my shoulder, frowning when I finally spotted a girl casually standing in the back, shadowed corner of the room.
"This is our new recruit," Isaac cleared his throat and at his words, the girl stepped out into the light, a small, kind smile stretching her lips.
Her light brown eyes met mine for a brief second before they flickered to Damien and when they did, I immediately noticed her cheeks tinge pink. She straightened up and tucked her long, brown hair behind her ear and bit down on her rosy coloured lips, tugging at the bottom of her leather jacket.
"I'm Serena," she addressed everyone with a soft voice and even though she seemed shy, I felt that she exuded an air of confidence.
"Serena will be training with Damien for the next week," Isaac repeated what Rhea had told Damien last night, his voice harsh as I turned around. "Juliet, you will continue to train too but if I require Damien to go on a mission, Serena will be going instead," he commanded and I bit down on my lip, nodding stiffly.
"I've been training Juliet for longer though –she's more experienced," Damien tried to argue but Isaac turned his glare to Damien and held his hand up, cutting him off.
"Serena is a werewolf so she's already got quite a bit of training experience anyway. Juliet is still suspended for the remainder of the week. Stay with Serena and teach her what she needs to know."
"Sir-"
"All of you but Cynthius are dismissed," Isaac coldly interjected and I winced, bowing my head slightly. I heard Damien angrily sigh but, without a word, he stalked from the room and I hurriedly followed after him, completely aware that Serena was timidly following behind me.
