After finishing up, Dawn hung up her apron and turned the lights off then locked the door. Her nightly ritual- she'd watch the lights go out one by one as the darkness flooded in.
It was about 5 in the afternoon and Dawn was ready to do something she usually didn't do. Talk to a man. Her heart had skipped a beat when she laid eyes on one of the customers earlier. She'd slickly asked him if anyone was joining him to see if he had a girlfriend. He'd laughed and made a joke about how single he was. Which was exactly what she wanted.
Dawn smiled as she left the diner and got in her car. She'd finally gotten her license. It had taken a while, but it was worth it. Busses sucked.
"Hey, how ya doin!?" A scruffy man on a motorcycle beside her hollered.
"Nope. Nope. Nope." Dawn pulled out of the lot and sped off. "Old men need to lay off." She grumbled to her self. Feeling vivacious, she pulled to a stop in front of the place the man worked and hopped out of her car, slamming the door with a certain sassiness. She'd snuck a peek at his wallet and seen his business card. He worked at a Travel agency. Their main travel lines went to Phillipines. Where she had been born.
"Whoo." She exhaled anxiously. This was out of her comfort zone, but the worst that could happen would be him saying no. She forced her legs to move and walked into the building.
"Hello and welcome to Air lines to Asia, how can I help-" The man paused and his face lit up in recognition. "You're the young woman who served me today. Those were some good pancakes!"
Dawn laughed, awkwardly shoving her hands in her pockets, then taking them out and walking up to the desk. She leaned against the desk. "I'm probably older than you, don't call me young, mister." A smile crept up her face and her cheeks flushed.
"You have a nice smile." He complimented her, leaning in as well.
Dawn's heart sped and she felt her face heating up. Just looking at him took her breath away. His sharp features and smooth, low voice...
"You still there?" He rapped his fingers on the desk.
"Oh, yeah!" Dawn blushed and took a step back.
"So where are you thinking of traveling?" He smiled and slid a brochure across the counter.
Into your bed, Her mind dirtily responded. "I-I actually didn't want to travel anywhere, I wanted to ask for your number." Dawn's heart raced and she waited for what seemed like hours for his response. It was actually a few seconds.
"Oh! Yeah, here give me a sec." He smiled goofily and fumbled with the brochure, trying to put it back. His face began to redden and he produced a pen and paper. "Here's my number, uh I get off work in an hour... you want to g-get a bite to eat when I get off?" He slid the paper over to Dawn and smiled meekly, looking like a giddy puppy.
Dawn screamed inside, then nodded furiously. "Yeah I'd love to really yes!" She said all in one breath. This was the best day ever. She picked up the note and glanced around. "I'll just go down the street and be back in an hour!"
Dawn nearly danced out the door and skipped down the street. She laughed. "I don't even know his name!" She grabbed her phone and went to contacts, clicking on Riane. Her smile faded and she clicked back to the homescreen. Out of routine she had gone to tell Riane... but that friendship had ended.
"Hey, where'd my smile go?" The man looked down at Dawn, he was very tall and Dawn was very short. "Your smile is gone, that's not good... But I got off early!" He looked around in excitement. "Where do you want to eat?"
Dawn blushed and a smile crept up her lips at his comment. "Slow down, I don't even know your name!" She laughed.
Surprise spread across his face. "I never even told you my name?"
