Howling wind rushed through the streets and cold, darting rain pelted the top of the purple umbrella. A street light flickered ominously across the street and flashing lights retreated into the darkness, the police just leaving the area. Dawn squatted above a spot of red on the sidewalk. What happened here? She gingerly touched it with an outstretched hand. It was blood.

Shaking the water off her arm, she pulled her coat around her and stood up. Scanning the ground again, she paused. A small gold speck glittered in the grass lining the sidewalk.

Dawn drew in a cold breath and picked up the golden item. Gently turning it over, she traced a small golden rose with her finger. She knew who this belonged to.

The necklace dangled from Dawn's hand as she contemplated whether she should drop it and stomp on it, releasing her pent up emotions -or if she should keep it and use it to her advantage. It found its way into her pocket and her feet hastily brought her home, dodging puddles that formed in the dips of the sidewalk. Her hands gripped the umbrella tighter as images flashed across her memory and anger pushed at the wall she'd built in her mind. "Get over it." She hissed to herself, quickening her pace as the rain came down faster and harder. She shifted a grocery bag to her other arm as a car sped by, sending mud over the sidewalk and her coat.

She fumbled with her keys and hasilty unlocked the door to her apartment then closed her umbrella and tossed it into the closet.

She threw her coat to the floor and slammed the groceries on the counter, her actions in tune with the thoughts coarsing through her head. She just couldn't understand why Riane would go through the trouble to set her up with Lincoln, while also cheating on Trojan with him. What the HELL was wrong with her? Dawn angrily bit into an apple and held it in her mouth as she emptied the rest of her food into her small fridge then slammed the door.

The small apartment she occupied was just enough for her and Mae, her closest friend. The walls were a faded yellow and there were two bedrooms. The kitchen was warm and cozy, and there was always a cake of some sort half eaten on the counter.

Dawn finished the apple and tossed the rind to Rave, her disproportionate dog. He was a large Rottwieler with big, clumpy paws and large floppy ears. He snatched the rind out if the air and chewed it gratefully, then rushed to dawns side and wagged his tail in excitement. She ruffled his fur with a hand, then closed her room door behind her.

She pulled off her shirt and tossed it in a pile of clothes against the wall then climbed into bed and pulled the sheets up around her. Drawing in a breath of chilly air, she brought the blanket over her head and stared into the fibers. Letting out a heated breath, she battled the crude thoughts surfacing in her mind. The things she'd told herself she'd do to Lincoln if she ever saw him again. The hatred that boiled her blood when she saw them kissing. When she watched the wedding ring skid across the floor.

She found herself wishing murder wasn't a crime, because someone who could hurt you that much then just drop off the face of the earth didn't deserve to live.

Lincoln had disappeared shortly after the incident and hadn't said a word to anyone. That was so rude.

Dawn yawned. It had been a long day and sleep sounded real nice. Closing her eyes, she welcomed sleep.

A sharp rap on the door brought Dawn scrambling out of bed. She rubbed her eyes as they adjusted to the light outside her dark room. It was 5 in the morning.
