Waiting for the clock to tick
Whistling for an unknown trick
Restless head lies on a pillow
Breathing slow and ever shallow
Blankets kicked off heating body
Heartbeat clicking, slow and steady
Eyes fluttering yet never drifting shut
Easy now, your lungs feel flat
Buzzing insects fight their way
Into my tired consciousness, I pray
At the mercy of my surfacing thoughts
Murky memories leave me distraught
Twiddling thumbs on either side
Strap myself in for another sleepless night.
