Damian looked at his phone the time read 11:33am.
She was late.
He sat by the window of the small cafe waiting for Elena. He watched as couples and people made their way through the gloomy rain that hadn't stopped since the night before. He thought about the floods that would build up on the streets, causing more chaos that Gotham did not need nor want.He was tired, he could practically feel the bags under his eyes. His father had disposed of one of Joker's deadly bombs last night and had saved over 3,000 people from death in which they would laugh until they stopped breathing.
Damian had been on crowd control duty since his run in with Harley. Damian knew what his father was doing, he wasn't punishing him, he was letting Damian cool off. He could have really done damage to Harley, she'd come out bruised but no need for surgery. He felt the guilt curl up his throat and he swallowed it immediately. He wouldn't let it win.
He looked up and Elena was standing above him.
"Hey there", she said trying to smile.
"Thanks for coming"he said and stood up awkwardly as if he was going to shake her hand.
She giggled at him. "I'm not a business partner and we aren't in a meeting", her smile was softer now. Damian scratches the back of his neck as Elena sat down across from him.
"So where do you want me to start?"she asked, putting down her bag at her feet.
"Just tell me everything, right from the start", he said.
Elena blinked and honestly was surprised no one had ever asked her to tell her side of the story."The year before we came to Gotham Academy is when this all unfolded, Lola and I had been best friends since kindergarten. We went everywhere together, we did everything together and whatever I got she got we were like sisters..well that's what I thought anyway."
She couldn't meet Damian's eye. It still stung the thought of what they'd been through together.
"One thing that never changed was that Lola was the boss, she had always been in charge of me so if she didn't like what I was wearing she would make me change it. I didn't mind at first, I thought this what best friends did."
"When I realised that Lola was controlling me, I decided I'd talk to her about it and work things out, you know set some boundaries and stuff but when I explain things to her, she blew a fuse and..well..she hit me.",Elena hesitated.
"Nobody knows"she added.
Damian looked very concerned at this point.
"I told her I didn't want to be around her anymore and that was the end of it,well..that's what I thought anyways.""The next morning, while I was getting ready for school, my mom got a phone call from John Franklin saying that Lola was crying and that she wouldn't go to school because I would be there waiting to call her names and tease her about her freckles.
So I was forced to apolgise for something I never did."Elena swallowed"When I came into school that morning my entire class wouldn't even make eye contact with me. Lola had turned the entire class against me."Not a single person picked me for their team in gym class, nobody would sing while I played the piano and I ate my lunch alone for weeks after..", Elena looked away.
"She came to me before school started and told me to stay as far away as possible from her or she'd ruin me again.",she said quietly. "I can assure you, she did not have to tell me twice."Elena laughed dryly.
Damian sat there with resentment burning bright in his emerald eyes. "I'm guessing you never got an apology?",he said clenching his jaw.She shook her head. "Look if I win this music competition I'll finally show Lola that she doesn't define who I am anymore", Elena explained.
"I'm sorry about what happened to you, best friends shouldn't treat each other like that."he felt the urge to take her hand. Elena looked at him and smiled
"Thank you", she laughed.
He gave her a rare smile.
She wiped her damp cheek and reset herself."So how did you end up with her?",Elena couldn't help herself.
Damian scowled at the thought of it. "We met at a charity event she was introduced to me and we were more or less matched together by her mother and our fathers became business partners. Lola's father owned a chemical company until her father went bankrupt and my father bought his company to save it."Damian shrugged"So now he works for my father. The only reason we are still 'together' is because I don't want attract any unwanted attention."I know how that feels", she laughed. "so what song are you playing?",Damian asked." Are you going? It's in Metropolis! That's like a 2-hour drive! "she said in a surprised tone "my father wants to go, but what song are you playing? ", he said he was dying to know.
She winked."it's a secret", she smirked and got up, "I gotta go, but thank you, Damian, this was nice. It really was. Let's do this again sometime okay?",she smiled and walked out of the cafe, leaving Damian once again full of curiosity.
