ANJALI WAS COOKING VIGOROUSLY, RUNNING BACK AND FORTH IN THE KITCHEN, when she suddenly bumped into Daijaan.
"Oh! Sorry, Khala," she said sheepishly.
Daijaan laughed. "Koi baat nahi [No problem], Anjali." She took a whiff of the heavenly golden chicken curry Anjali was stirring. "Mmmm. Kya baat hai? Itni tension mein kyun lag rahi ho? [What is it? Why are you so tensed?] Are you stress-cooking again?" she asked, referring to Anjali's peculiar habit of cooking ridiculously huge amounts of food when she was worried.
Anjali sighed. "Kya karoon, Khala? Badi mushkil se maine Krish ko India mein laaya, Rahul ko samjhane ke baad. [What do I do, Khala? With so much difficulty I brought Krish to India, after convincing Rahul.]" She threw her hands up in the air as she began to rant, narrowing her eyes. "Aur bees saal ke baad iss firangi item ne yahan bhi aaya. Chain se nahi jeene doongi, iss chudail! [And twenty years later, this foreign chick came here too. This witch won't let me live in peace!]"
"I know, Anjali. Main samajh sakti hoon [I can understand]," Daijaan sympathized. "Par Krish toh samajhdar hai [Krish is sensible], he won't be tricked by her."
"I worry about him, Khala," Anjali admitted, adding salt into her magnificent curry. "Kya karoon? Ma jo hoon, na. Aur main iss tarah ke ladkiyon ke baare mein bohot acche se jaanti hoon. Aur mujhe pata hai ki daal mein kuch khaala hai. [What do I do? I'm his mom, right. And I know these girls very well. And I'm sure something is fishy.] I just don't want to see him hurt."
Before Daijaan could answer, Pooja appeared out of nowhere. She sat down by the kitchen counter dramatically.
"Oh God! Didi, Khala please help me, na! I can't figure out what to wear to the party tonight!" she exclaimed. Though they weren't exactly fashion-forward, Daijaan and Anjali enjoyed helping Pooja. She had always been their princess, and that was precisely why they let her wear whatever she wanted, no matter how short - much to Rahul's chagrin.
"Why don't you wear that red dress you just bought?" Daijaan suggested, though Pooja's jaw dropped.
"KHALA! That's so last month! Aur phir bohot zyaada lamba hai! [And it's way too long!]" she said incredulously.
Anjali thought for a minute. "How about the gold miniskirt set? Everyone was so jealous of you last time."
"Hmm. True, but. . .ugh." Pooja rolled her eyes. "You guys are no help! I can't wear something like that AGAIN! I need something new, something fresh, something. . ." She snapped her fingers suddenly. "EXACTLY! Poo, you've done it again." She grinned proudly, and ran off to scour her massive closet.
Anjali and Daijaan just laughed, shaking their heads. Daijaan picked up a spoon and stirred the curry, as Anjali checked on the rice.
"So, why exactly are we having a party again?" Daijaan asked and Anjali laughed. The two not knowing their parties very well was not uncommon. They didn't love being social, unlike the whirlwind Poo.
"Don't worry, Khala. It's a small party," Anjali assured her, though a small party for the Raichands wasn't exactly what a regular person would describe as small. "I'm not sure who exactly Rahul invited, but I believe it's to celebrate Yuvi's return? And also Pammi Aunty and Rakesh Uncle's wedding anniversary? And Saira Oberoi's graduation?"
Daijaan laughed. High society parties were always odd. No one ever seemed to know exactly who or what the party was for - they just came to show off in fancy, new outfits and drink expensive alcohol, in her opinion.
She suddenly thought of something. "Wait, didn't you say you ordered some sweets from Chandni Chowk?"
"Oh, haan! [Oh, yes!]" Anjali slapped her forehead. "Thanks for reminding me, I forgot about that. I ordered from the place outside, uh, I think the Fatehpuri Masjid?"
