IT WAS A RATHER CLOUDY NIGHT, as if the clouds up in the heavens had all gathered to witness Krish's date with Annette. It had been a bit of a rocky start - Krish was incredibly self-conscious, maybe due to the fresh pain of his breakup, or perhaps the history he shared with Annette. But Annette was charming as ever, and before they knew it, they were able to dive into smooth, back-and-forth conversation.
They started off with their date at the nicest restaurant Krish knew, that served Continental cuisine. He wasn't sure how Annette handled complete desi khaana [desi food], and something told him he wouldn't want to take any chances.
Now they were walking side-by-side. She had shivered, and Krish had immediately wrapped his jacket around her (he knew at least that much from movies and Yuvi). The dark navy of the sky somehow matched Annette's lovely dress. Her golden curls bounced as she walked, sending a mesmerized Krish into oblivion.
She drove him crazy.
"Do you remember our school's Annual Day Function?" he asked, out of the blue.
"Of course, how could I forget?" Annette laughed, brushing her curls away from her stunning face, shaking her head.
Krish broke out into a grin. "And we sang the Indian National Anthem?"
"Yup. I still don't know how we managed to pull that off. Your aunt wanted us to sing Do A Deer!" she giggled, eyes twinkling with mirth. "And then you forgot the lines, so your mom ran up and hugged you on stage!"
Krish reddened at that and Annette raised an eyebrow teasingly. "So tell me, Krish. Are you still quite the singer?"
"Not in the least," Krish admitted, grinning. "I still don't know how I did that."
The two subsequently broke out into laughter, reveling in the bittersweet beauty of the past.
As their laughter subsided, Annette looked at him, a newfound sense of seriousness gracing her features. "I guess that was almost like foreshadowing, huh?" she said softly as Krish frowned in confusion. "I mean, my first Hindi song. And now I'm here. In India. With you." Her chocolate brown eyes glittered at him. Krish smiled.
A wave of loud music vibrating from a club further up the street, followed by the flashing of neon lights, interrupted them. Krish looked down at his date. She looked at him, at the club with a longing flicker in her eyes, and then down again.
"Want to go?" he asked kindly, and she immediately nodded, excitement lighting up her smile. He took her hand and she fluttered her eyelashes at him as he led her inside.
. . .
PRIYA WAS A LOT OF FUN, Yuvi was beginning to realize. She was an odd girl, really, but Yuvi himself was anything but normal. They were a perfect fit.
They were hanging out together again. They could tentatively be labeled as friends now, both glad about the development. But that didn't mean they completely stopped the snide remarks and casual bickering. After all, some things would never change.
They had attended another lame (in their words) party, before ditching the function altogether. Priya had spotted a club and nearly dragged Yuvi inside. He didn't mind though. He was prepared for dancing, Priya's crazy antics, and a whole lot of drinks. Drunk Priya was really something else. So nothing prepared him for the sight he was about to see.
"Yuvi! GET ME SOME MORE DRINKS! SURPRISE ME!" came the already-slurred voice of Priya, who sat at the high chairs of the bar, already guzzling down several glasses. Yuvi smiled, shaking his head, before obliging to the self-proclaimed queen's request.
In the crowd, he unexpectedly spotted Krish. That was odd. Nearly yesterday he was still sitting at home, and suddenly he was dancing among dark figures, loud music, and bright neon lights. And he was beaming. What? Who was he with?
Yuvi got his answer. Krish pulled a figure towards him - a tall, curvy figure in a short dress. A blonde figure. A very familiar figure.
Yuvi's jaw dropped.
Meanwhile, Krish smiled down at Annette as they danced. It was great fun really, losing himself in the music. And Annette, with her striking eyes and gorgeous smiles and blonde hair. He wrapped his arms around her waist despite himself, and she placed her hands around his neck.
Yuvi saw red. Momentarily forgetting about the snarky, full-of-spunk girl at the bar waiting for him, he stalked right into the crowd, lunging at Krish and pulling him away from Annette at once. Grabbing his older cousin's arm, he forcibly dragged him to a corner, far away from the dancing celebrators.
"BHAIYYA? What are you doing?" Yuvi bellowed, the veins in his forehead about to pop in pure rage.
"What? I'm out, like you told me to. . ." Krish said to the furious young man, perplexed at the latter's peculiar behavior.
"But I didn't tell you to go out with HER," Yuvi exclaimed, referring to Annette with an utter full of pure disgust.
"Ladki ke baare mein kuch mat kehna [Don't say anything about the girl]," Krish said calmly, revealing his sore spot regarding respect for girls. "And what problem do you have with Annette anyways?"
Flabbergasted at the direct question and at a loss for words, Yuvi staggered back slightly. "Well, I-I -" he began weakly. "I just know these things, okay?!"
Krish looked at him and raised an eyebrow, unconvinced.
Yuvi felt his fury being replaced by annoyance. "You know what?! Fine. Do what you want. Don't come crying to me when this ends badly," he sneered, quickly walking away.
He stormed off to the bar, gently taking Priya's hand.
"Priya. We're leaving," he said emotionlessly.
"What?! But why?!" the raven-haired beauty protested. Yuvi gave her a firm look, but she could see the desperation in his eyes.
"Please." His voice was stone-cold yet soft underneath.
Priya nodded. "Okay." She let him led her out of the club, her eyes curiously scanning the crowd for any possible indication as to why he was so upset.
Then she spotted his cousin-brother, talking to a concerned blonde girl. Oh, this was bad.
. . .
I know clubs and drinking aren't the funnest things to read about (or in my case, write about), but these days that's what the kids do. 😂 Especially Yuvi and Priya.
