"Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait." I lightly jogged over to him. "The surface? Are you crazy? They'll kill us before we even get to Level 6, which by the way is completely guarded and definitely not escapable. Unless you're suicidal, I don't recommend doing that." Carver paced the floor, sitting down every once in a while only to stand back up to pace. His hair was still floating around his head gently and his eyes were still glowing. He reminded me of a predator in a cage, pacing back and forth waiting for someone to come near the cage so he could pounce.
"I can't change down here or we'll be buried alive, damnit." His fingers flexed at his side, while his skin glimmered and shone. "Of course the one time someone catches me they put me thousands of feet underground."
"What do you mean, caught you? What level did you come from?" He wasn't making any sense, it was almost like-
"I came from the surface. I didn't grow up here like the rest of you did. And I'm glad I didn't because I wanna go back outside!" His voice boomed the last sentence out, obviously getting the attention of the people watching us.
The lady's voice came on over us.
"You know you can't go outside Carver." There was that word again, outside. Everyone here but me seemed to know what the outside looked like. My jealousy skyrocketed, why was he able to live his entire life outside but I couldn't even see a picture of it? They never even gave us any books for goodness sake that described what it looked like. I guess they didn't want to place any thoughts in our head that would make us want to escape here. "You've been destroying a lot of things up there lately, and the president doesn't exactly appreciate it."
"You've got the wrong fucking guy then because I've been asleep the last forty years." A deep growl shook the room. Forty years?- he only looked a few years younger than I, what was he that allowed him to sleep for forty years? Long sharp canines extended out of his mouth, piercing his lip and sending a thin trail of blood down the front of his shirt. "You fucked up and you're all going to pay for it!"
Very faintly, in the background of the woman's voice you could hear people rushing around. "Someone get troops in there quickly. The serum wore off. How long ago did you give it to him?!" The woman's voice came on again clear and void of emotions. "Winifred, go to your room, now." I flinched at her words, they weren't as soothing and calm as they were before.
"She's not going anywhere! She has nothing to do with this!" Carver backed up towards me, grabbing my hand and pushing us towards the loft stairs. "Go up to the loft, I'm right behind you. I don't want them playing any dirty tricks." For right now, I decided to do as he said. Getting on his bad side wasn't the smartest thing to do at the moment. Once in the loft, I decided to confront him.
"Carver...... you have to calm down." He spun around and growled at me, his glowing eyes now angry and animalistic.
"If I calm down do you think I'll be able to defend us? They're probably coming down here right now to give me more of their shit so I can't do this. They don't want me being more powerful than they are." Stalking towards me, he backed me down into my favorite chair and leaned in close. "Don't you want to get out of here and see the sky, grass, the ocean?" My eyes watered and I nodded sadly.
"What color is the sky?" I asked quietly, watching those small brown dots on his nose, what were they?
"Baby blue, like your eyes." Definitely not the red I had imagined previously. A crash came from downstairs. "They're already here, fuck." He crouched down and slowly looked over the ledge of the loft that looked down on the living room. A dart whistled past and stuck into the bookshelf right next to his head, this time the fluff balls were red.
