Sorry it's been so long since I updated, I got hella stuck trying to transition everything to exactly the way I wanted it. Anyway, hope you enjoy! Above is Virunas. Below is Joon. I updated this chapter again, added more onto it because I felt like it ended rater abruptly and odd. Hope you enjoy!!!
We stopped once more at a gas station, this one also deserted. Volney woke me up this time, though not as sweetly as Carver. While the boys bought snacks, Veronica and I migrated to the bathroom together. Before we entered, Virunas handed Veronica a pen and a pad of paper. She wrote me questions when we stepped out of the stalls. At the top of the paper she wrote in pretty handwriting: "I can read lips, don't worry about writing back.""Are you sure?" I asked aloud, still unsure about her abilities. She gave me a cheerful, understanding nod.
The first question read: "How are you holding up? This is quite a change in scenery for you I've heard." That is an understatement.
"I'm doing better. Everything is unexpectedly different from how I imagined. Carver's been a big help, he's almost always supported me though." So far, I've never seen this woman without a pleased smile on her face. And even now, simply answering her first question seemed to give her satisfaction. Veronica gave me weird vibes, being too cheery for someone who'd just gone through battle, too happy with the Tall guy to notice how scarred the ones who got out are.
"How long have you lived down there?" Similar to Joon's question in the truck. I told her my same answer with a tense smile of my own to mask my displeasure at the mention of my upbringing.
Keep being polite, you can do it. Don't scare your only girl friend away, she could be your ticket to normalcy.
"Volney told me you're a Dryad, are there other Nymphs going to the camp?" Other Nymphs?
"As far as I know, I was the only one they kept down there." At this her pleased smile faltered. On the piece of paper she scratched off the last question and wrote something new, handing it to me when she was finished.
"We have an Anthusae back at camp, a flower Nymph. She's a bit....distant but I'm sure she'd be more than happy if you wanted to talk with her? Oswyn and I haven't come into contact or heard about many Nymphs or Dryads. Some say they've all gone into hiding. We can't seem to figure out why."
Hope swelled inside me. There was another Nymph at camp! Maybe she could tell me about my powers. "I would love to meet her! I've never met— I mean I've never even seen...this is so exciting! Thank you so much Veronica." Unexpectedly, I shot forwards and gave her a hug. She rested her chin on my head and hugged back.
On our way back to the truck, both of us considerably more elated, we decided to switch up the seating arrangements. Veronica was the new driver, me the passenger, Volney and Carver in the bed, and the three other men crammed into the backseat. None of them complained, but I could tell the reluctance Tall Guy had on his face when Veronica told him I'd be sitting up front with her.
